Peponi Beach Holiday in a nutshell
When landing at Lamu Airport, in the north of Kenya, it may not immediately strike you as the gateway to a relaxing beach break: there’s hustle and bustle, fishermen and builders at work, it’s hot and feels a bit chaotic. But as you climb aboard Peponi’s traditional wooden dhow and sail along the channel towards the lodge, a sense of calm is apparent. The lodge sits right on Lamu’s 12km beach.
Peponi is an owner-run, low key lodge in a traditional Swahili coastal style. Rooms and cottages ramble through the grounds, with options to suit a family, couples wanting more privacy, of for those who want to be in the heart of the lodge close to the dining areas and the lovely, peaceful swimming pool.
As well as a variety of watersports and boat excursions, this part of the coast has a long history and strong Arabic culture to explore, which is evident wherever you go. It’s possible to arrange boat trips out for lunch to neighbouring lodges, although Peponi’s own bar and restaurant is a particularly popular spot and great for a lively evening. It's a treat to spend a week on the Kenyan coast with a real sense of place – and with so many things to see and do.
