Wahlberg's Eagle Fly-in Safari

A great value safari in Laikipia and the Maasai Mara that provides an immersive, authentic bush camp experience with activities for families of all ages.

Wahlberg's Eagle Fly-in Safari: Summary

Wahlberg's Eagle Safari in a nutshell

Combining two contrasting parts of Kenya on safari is an ideal way to showcase some of the diversity of the country, both in terms of things to see and to do. This safari is particularly good for families, with children of any age, and at a week long it could even be fit into a half term.

El Karama Ranch, in the Laikipia region, is a family-run operation with a rustic, homely eco-lodge and different room options to suit all sorts of groups. With access to the wildlife on the ranch, as well the Ol Pejeta Conservancy if requested, game drives can be combined with walks, cooking in the farm kitchen, yoga, tennis and swimming too. The owners’ have young children and have set up a fantastic ‘bush school’, that runs alongside game drives for parents. The immersive, varied activities are a brilliant introduction to Africa for little ones.

Basecamp Eagle View is a great value tented camp in the private Naboisho Conservancy, part of the Maasai Mara ecosystem, where the quality of game viewing is excellent. The sustainable, down to earth camp has great links to the community and visiting the local school or arts centre offers worthwhile insights into rural life in Kenya. Basecamp has a ‘Young Explorer’s Club’ for children to learn bush skills from the Maasai, another great addition to the wildlife.

El Karama Lodge

Days 1-4

With a name meaning 'treasured possession' or 'answer to prayer' in Arabic, El Karama, as it's usually known, is a working cattle ranch and wildlife sanctuary on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in the Laikipia region north of Mount Kenya. It was named for purely sentimental reasons by its owners, the Grant family, who still run the ranch and manage the lodge: a small, rustic retreat and the only lodge on the ranch.

Basecamp Eagle View

Days 4-7

Basecamp Eagle View is located in a stunning spot, with arguably the best views in the quiet 211km² Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a Maasai-owned conservancy north of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It is small, with nine tented rooms set high on a hill. Each of these is cantilevered to the hillside, overlooking plains dotted with acacia trees of various species.
