Overview: Anti-poaching Dogs Display
Over the years these specialist K9 units have become integral to the management and conservation strategy in this region, and now several conservancies in Laikipia operate anti-poaching dog teams offering an additional layer of protection for both wildlife and the surrounding communities. Some of these areas include: Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Loisaba Conservancy.
A typical visit will usually involve a short talk from an experienced ranger, who will explain how the dogs are cared for, trained and deployed in the field. There is usually a demonstration from the handlers showing how the dogs interact with their keepers, and volunteer guests are then encouraged to take part in a mock training exercise - to try and evade the sniffer dogs! Not only is this great fun, but it helps to offer genuine training for the dogs.
A visit to the anti-poaching dog units can be incorporated into your safari game drive, from a number of different camps, so please speak to us for more details. Laikipia offers wonderful wildlife sightings year-round, but the dry seasons (typically from June–October and December–March) usually offer better game-viewing opportunities alongside your visit to the dog unit.
