Anti-poaching Dogs Display

Anti-poaching Dogs Display

Overview: Anti-poaching Dogs Display

Visiting the anti-poaching dogs in Laikipia, Kenya, is a unique and exciting experience that offers insight into the crucial role these highly trained canines play in conservation. The dogs, often Bloodhounds, or Belgian Malinois are rigorously trained to track and apprehend poachers, detect contraband such as bushmeat or ivory, and assist rangers in patrolling and protecting the incredible wildlife found in this area.

Over the years these specialist K9 units have become integral to the management and conservation strategy in this region, and now several conservancies in Laikipia operate anti-poaching dog teams offering an additional layer of protection for both wildlife and the surrounding communities. Some of these areas include: Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Lewa Wildlife Conservancy and Loisaba Conservancy.

A typical visit will usually involve a short talk from an experienced ranger, who will explain how the dogs are cared for, trained and deployed in the field. There is usually a demonstration from the handlers showing how the dogs interact with their keepers, and volunteer guests are then encouraged to take part in a mock training exercise - to try and evade the sniffer dogs! Not only is this great fun, but it helps to offer genuine training for the dogs.

A visit to the anti-poaching dog units can be incorporated into your safari game drive, from a number of different camps, so please speak to us for more details. Laikipia offers wonderful wildlife sightings year-round, but the dry seasons (typically from June–October and December–March) usually offer better game-viewing opportunities alongside your visit to the dog unit.
