Jan 2025 mountain gorilla trek and safari
Kenya and 1 other country between 21 Jan 2025 and 6 Feb 2025
From start to finish, we were always welcomed and guided on our way, making for a very stress-free vacation.
Even when one of our short bush flights got changed due to the weather, Richard made alternative arrangements and emailed me the new plan before the camp staff even had a chance to tell me of the change.
I can be quite critical, but I cannot think of a single thing that I would change. You did an amazing job."

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
"Mountain Gorilla View Lodge review"
The shower didn't work (I helped them replace the shower head). A ceiling light needed to be replaced, but the new bulb only lasted a day. For some reason, dinner on the last night was delayed almost an hour with no explanation.
The staff is extremely friendly and goes out of their way to be helpful. Sometimes too helpful. First someone drops off firewood, then someone drops off toilet paper, then someone stops by to start the fire in the fireplace, then someone stops by to turn down the beds, then someone stops by to put hot water bottles under the quilt. All in one evening.
Every evening there is a short cultural dance show out on the lawn that varied each night. Tips are appreciated but not required.
Upon returning to the lodge after our treks, we were greeted at the lobby where we took our boots off and put on provided sandals.
Our boots were taken for cleaning and returned to our room a short time later. Outstanding!"

Tell your driver guide the night before your trek what type of experience you are looking for...easy to difficult.
That way they can pass it along to the trekking people to try and match your desires/abilities to the length/difficulty of the trek.
It was an amazing experience. We found our gorilla group after walking about 90 minutes.
The silverback walked right in front of me. Apparently, I was so mesmerized that I failed to hear the guide urgently whispering to back up further off of the trail to give the silerback more space. We followed him and his group as they foraged thru the jungle.

Kicheche Laikipia
"Kicheche Laikipia review"
The plumbing fixtures are showing their age and are ready for a refurbishment. The water is extremely soft, to the point of feeling slimy sometimes. The provided drinking water is excellent.
Even with these quibbles, Kicheche Laikipia is an amazing place to stay.
The staff are simply outstanding in their desire and ability to please.
The kitchen staff provides amazing meals.
The game drive guides are superb.
They aim to give everyone their own vehicle/guide whenever possible. Their five seat (2/3) vehicle has plenty of legroom and the open sides offer great visibility. Many other companies only use six seat vehicles, even for only two guests. They are the same size as Kicheche's vehicle, but have an extra row of seating. As you can imagine, that can get quite tight, especially for a tall person like myself. You are going to be in that thing for eight hours a day, getting tossed about on the rut filled roads. Always ask for a two-row vehicle!"

Anti-Poaching Dog Unit Visit
"Anti-Poaching Dog Unit Visit review"
30 Jan 2025 • All-day excursion
We were each given a single bullet and told to drop it anywhere we wanted in a field. Then they brought out the search dog, and he found them both.
After that demonstration, they asked my wife to make a footprint in the moist dirt. They pressed a sterile pad into the print, then put the pad in a glass jar and asked my wife to go hide somewhere. She went behind some bushes near a distant tree line...at least 200 meters away. Then they brought out a tracking bloodhound (different than the search dog). After getting a smell of the pad in the glass jar, he had no trouble finding my wife. Amazing.
Be prepared to give a generous tip to the dog handlers.

Definitely recommended.

Day Trip to the Ngare Ndare Forest
"Day Trip to the Ngare Ndare Forest review"
1 Feb 2025 • All-day excursion
The trail is about 7 km round trip and only for the sure-footed as the trail is rocky and slippery in many places.
After returning from the waterfall, we went on another trail that included a 1/2 km canopy walk that is suspended high over the jungle floor. Unless you are comfortable squatting over a hole in the ground, ask for a bathroom break before you get to the park.

Kicheche Valley
"Kicheche Valley review"
You have a porch area that looks out onto the valley. It is not a fenced camp, so the animals can walk right up to you. We had several giraffes pass in front of us. At night, the frisky lions were always quite close and vocal. No going outside after dark without an escort!
The tents are more spacious and comfortable than most hotel rooms. The oversized shower had plenty of hot water any time you wanted it. There are plenty of charging ports (UK, European, US, and USB). The staff are simply outstanding in their desire and ability to please. The kitchen staff provides amazing meals and can accommodate almost any request regarding a particular diet.
