Cape Town airport to Mount Nelson by road
Having cleared the formalities at Cape Town Airport, you'll be met by a driver for the journey to the Mount Nelson Hotel. Depending on the time of day, this will take around 20–45 minutes, but with Table Mountain looming ever closer, it can be a fascinating drive.

Cape Town to the Okavango by road & air
Today's journey of about six hours starts with a drive to the airport for the scheduled 2½-hour flight to Maun. Here you'll switch to a light aircraft for a scenic flight over the Delta, followed by a short game drive to Kwara Camp; watch out for wildlife on the way.
Kwara Camp
With guides whose focus is firmly on the big predators, Kwara is in a perfect area of the Okavango. In this private reserve, wildlife – both predators and prey – can be prolific. To maximise the chances of big-cat sightings, every 4WD excursion is led by a guide and tracker, and the guides are in constant contact by radio. It's all about the wildlife here – the camp even has a "digital detox" policy to ensure that your experience won't be marred by pesky emails or other digital disturbances during your stay.

Rather more serene, both mokoros and a double-decker boat are on hand for effortless exploration of the lily-strewn waterways, perhaps combined with a guided walk.
Equally, with seasonal floodplains and a permanent lagoon in front of the island-based camp, and mature trees affording superb bird cover, it’s tempting to let the wildlife come to you.
In the huge “tented rooms”, beds, sofas, verandas, even baths are carefully sited to make the most of the views.
If you fancy company, a short stroll brings you to a thatched, open-sided structure complete with lounge, dining table, library, bar and curio shop. Colonial-style furniture combines effortlessly with simple stretched-canvas walls to give a contemporary-chic feel – designed for adults only.
"Overall a great experience."

There are proper pools – complete with bars and sunloungers – at each end of camp, and a firepit down by the lagoon. And arguably of greatest importance, all share that captivating outlook. See our full report on Kwara Camp

Kwara to Victoria Falls by light aircraft & road
After a last activity at Kwara, today's journey of around three hours starts with a scenic light-aircraft flight to Kasane. You'll be met for the short drive to the Kazungula border post and introduced to your Zimbabwean driver. Then, formalities complete, it's a pleasant drive to the Victoria Falls Hotel.
Victoria Falls Hotel
Not just the most famous name in town, this grand old lady of yesteryear is still up there with the best. Let’s start with the setting. Looking proudly down on the bridge that spans the Zambezi River gorge, the Victoria Falls Hotel remains the closest hotel in town to the waterfall. Just a 15-minute stroll from the extensive lawns and you’re gazing at one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

Then there’s the sheer glamour of the place. Oozing Edwardian style, it is now fitted out in contemporary comfort to marry the charm of the old world with the efficiency of the new.
Not least among its attractions is the imposing Livingstone Room. While jackets and ties are no longer de rigueur, dinner here remains a gloriously formal occasion with a top-notch menu, along with dancing accompanied by a live pianist.
Of course, you could work up an appetite on the tennis court or in the pool, but a relaxing spa treatment seems rather more appropriate before high tea, or perhaps cocktails on the terrace.

Victoria Falls to Nairobi by road & air
Following a leisurely morning, you'll be collected from the Victoria Falls Hotel for a scheduled flight of some 3¼ hours to Nairobi. Once the formalities are complete, a driver will be waiting to transport you towards the city centre, arriving at Ole-Sereni after a journey of around 5–6 hours.
Ole-Sereni
Opened in 2009, the Ole-Sereni is a convenient hotel for Nairobi’s airports. The building, which formerly housed the US Embassy, borders the north side of Nairobi National Park, and has a first-floor terrace giving direct views across the savannah.

"the rooms overlooking the Safari park are fun"
FamilyBfromLos AltosArrived 23 Dec 2023, 3 nights
Glitzy and flamboyant as it is, we wouldn’t normally gravitate to this kind of hotel. But the Ole-Sereni holds two strong cards. Firstly, it really is quite close to the international airport, making transfers relatively painless; and secondly, its food is excellent and deserves its good reputation. If you're staying here, the small rooms with thin walls are perhaps to be expected in a city hotel, but a frequent lack of attention to detail is also something to be prepared for. Nairobi to Maasai Mara by road & air
It's a 30–60 minute drive to Wilson Airport, skirting Nairobi National Park, before today's 45–60-minute flight over the Great Rift Valley into the Maasai Mara. You may touch down en route before landing at Musiara Airstrip, where a guide from Little Governors’ Camp will be waiting to drive you to camp.
Little Governors'
On the lip of an old oxbow of the Mara River, now a broad marsh frequented by elephants, Little Governors' Camp is one of only a handful of places to stay in the Mara Triangle sector of the Maasai Mara National Reserve. It has won a place in the hearts of many safari-goers and has been a favourite with visitors to the Maasai Mara since the 1970s.

"We love Little Governors...tent, food, service, guide and all staff...excellent"
Mr & Mrs EfromNorthumberArrived 24 Jan 2024, 4 nights
Little Governors' is our favourite of the three Governors' camps. The location is terrific, and every tent has a wonderful view of the marsh. If you're doing a balloon flight, then staying here makes it very easy. Most first-time safari-goers adore this camp; many come back year after year; and lots of guests wouldn't change a thing. The new fully-solar power arrangements are commendable. And if you like the idea of a streamlined and dependable set-up, and want a camp that is smaller than the main Governors', then take a good look at this one. Kigali to Volcanoes National Park by road
From central Kigali, it takes around three hours on a scenic, winding highway to reach the foothills below Volcanoes National Park. Depending on any stops you make en route, you should arrive at Mountain Gorilla View Lodge in time for lunch.
Mountain Gorilla View
On the slopes of Mount Sabyinyo, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge has beautiful views of the surrounding volcanoes. Nestled beneath the towering, forested Virunga range, and perfectly placed for gorilla trekking, the lodge is aptly named. The setting, the friendly atmosphere and the best value for money in the area combine to give this lodge enduring appeal.

First up are the sizeable grounds on the slopes of the extinct Mount Sabyinyo, the trees alive with birds and monkeys, and views at almost every turn.
Dotted around the site, 40 large, rather rustic cottages constructed of stone and thatch offer plenty of privacy. Comfortable yet simply furnished, if rather old-fashioned, they have plain plastered walls, a sleeping area raised slightly above the lounge, and a colourful bathroom.
To offset the chill of mountain evenings, there’s a fireplace in each room and in the main area, whose burnt-red walls, patterned rugs and zebra-print sofas afford a somewhat eclectic charm.
Its setting aside, the hotel’s entire raison d’être is its proximity to Rwanda’s habituated mountain gorilla families. Just a 15-minute drive brings you to the start of the trek in Volcanoes National Park, while seeking out golden monkeys, hiking or even canoeing are also on the agenda.

Golden Monkey Trekking
Spend a morning trekking to find the golden monkeys in the Volcanoes National Park. These endangered monkeys are endemic to the Albertine Rift area and are characterised by their golden-orange fur. You’ll be able to enjoy an hour watching them jump through the bamboo and hunker down to chew bamboo leaves, curiously watching you, as you watch them.
Your driver-guide from Kigali will operate your transfers to the park headquarters and introduce you to your trekking group and parks guide. Read all about Golden Monkey Trekking
Gorilla Trekking Safari
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is a magical experience, transcending any other wildlife encounter we know. Meeting a gorilla family in their forest home, led by a dominant male silverback and a cluster of females and young, is a natural adventure that fully repays the cost in unforgettable memories and images.
