Denis is a remote coral island some 90km north of Mahé. Touching down on its grass airstrip, it feels like a thousand miles from anywhere – this is a real desert island.
Your spacious cottage, one of 25, is tucked into the tropical vegetation at the beach’s edge. With no in-room interest or television, you can unplug from the world and get into the island’s laid-back rhythm. The spa’s wellness treatments can help with this too.
Spend your time here however you feel. Maybe rise early with the rangers to tally tracks of sea turtles on the beach or scout the forest for magpie robins and paradise flycatchers to learn about the conservation projects that protect these critically endangered birds. Walk to the old lighthouse, meeting century-old island residents in the tortoises that graze on the island, or cycle to a secluded stretch of sand.
The reefs around Denis are protected and teeming with life. Kayak and snorkel or, for more time underwater, head to the PADI dive centre for a trip out into greater depths. Catch-and-release sport fishing is also a draw here.
Whether in the restaurant or on the beach, dine on celebrated cuisine, the vast majority of it from right here. With an organic farm and even a small dairy herd producing milk for cheesemaking, produce couldn’t be fresher.
