Duiker Safari

Three luxurious bushcamps in stunning riverside locations, split between the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi national parks, offer a wide variety of expert-guided safari activities in stunning game-rich environments.

Duiker Safari: Summary

Duiker Safari in a nutshell

This smart fly-in safari visits Zambia’s two premier parks, South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi, staying at three stylish, small camps in stunning riverside locations. All are in game-rich areas, so expect big game sightings without leaving your room.

After flying to the South Luangwa National Park, you’ll stay at two luxurious sister-camps, Kakuli and Mchenja. Day and night drives here use open-topped 4WDs, but both camps also place a real emphasis on walking safaris, led by expert wildlife guides and accompanied by armed rangers. Aside from more widespread species, you’ve a good chance to see some of the Luangwa’s endemics here: Thornicraft’s giraffe, Cookson’s wildebeest and Crawshay’s zebra.

After flying from the Luangwa to the Lower Zambezi, you’ll arrive at Chongwe River Camp, which overlooks the national park from the confluence of the Chongwe and mighty Zambezi rivers. Immersed in the wilderness, the views are idyllic.

In addition to the Luangwa’s land-based safari activities, here you can also enjoy the wildlife from canoes and boats. This will add a new perspective to your safari, from seeing hippos and crocodiles close up, to the animals drinking and many water birds. Floating with the current, drink in hand, is also a very relaxing way to enjoy game-viewing.

Great guiding at each camp, creature comforts and a range of activities make this a really lovely way to enjoy two of Africa’s top national parks.

Kakuli Bushcamp

Days 1-4

Kakuli Bush Camp is a small, intimate camp situated in an area of South Luangwa National Park known for its high density of wildlife. One of Norman Carr Safaris’ seasonal camps, it overlooks a floodplain from an elevated bank of the Luangwa River, not far from its confluence with the Lubi (pronounced Luwi) River.

Mchenja Bushcamp

Days 4-7

Mchenja Bushcamp is a beautiful and luxurious camp in a lovely setting within an ebony grove, beside a bend of Zambia’s Luangwa River. The whole camp has wide views of the river, and is cool and shaded under the grove of tall ebony and sausage trees around it.

Chongwe River Camp

Days 7-11

Chongwe River Camp is located at the confluence of the Zambezi River and its tributary, the Chongwe River, which forms the western boundary of the Lower Zambezi National Park. It lies in a game management area (GMA) that reaches a further 80km west along the Zambezi – so while it is outside the (unfenced) park boundary, it is still in a very productive wildlife area, with elephants regularly seen in camp.
