Rock Agama Self-drive Safari: Summary
Rock Agama Self-drive in a nutshell
This action-packed self-drive safari is a great way to discover Namibia’s northern highlights for those with limited time. Staying at a selection of excellent lodges and camps, you can be assured of comfort, luxury and great service at every stop.
After a relaxing first evening in Windhoek, set off for the drive to the Namib Desert. Long but scenic, reach the wonderfully welcoming Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, an oasis of luxury in a rather stunning setting. Enjoy an evening gazing up from Africa’s first dark sky reserve from the lodge’s observatory before an early start to climb Sossusvlei’s imposing red dunes as the sun rises.
Drive north, skirting the Namib all the way to Swakopmund, a charming coastal town with some excellent restaurants where you’ll stop for the night. The following day, turn inland through the rocky mountains of Damaraland to Mowani, a great camp hidden amid rust coloured boulders. Explore the area in your car, visiting sites such the ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, or join Mowani’s guides in search of the elephant herds that roam the area.
Continue north-east to the southern edge of Etosha National Park’s lunar-like salt pan for two nights at the exclusive Little Ongava. Explore the national park in your own vehicle or on a guided game drive, watching quietly as rhino, zebra, lion, giraffe, elephant and more gather at waterholes. You can also take part in guided safari activities in Ongava’s private reserve where, unrestricted by park rules, night drives and walking safaris are permitted, too.
On the way to Windhoek, spend one final night in Okonjima Nature Reserve where you can learn about the conservation work of the AfriCat Foundation in safeguarding Namibian wildlife and seek out leopard and cheetah, with a chance for more unusual nocturnal species such as brown hyena, pangolin and even aardvark.
