"Zebra River Lodge review"

2 nights Arrived 18 Aug 2009
"A very 'mixed' experience - the previous owners of some years were leaving the next day, and so it was a bit hectic. The setting was unforgetable as was the drive to the lodge. Our room was perfectly adequate and the bathing facilities made of stone and charming.

However, it was cold and the windows wouldn't shut and, for the first time, no AC that could be used as a heater. The fire in the dining room was very welcome but was not lit in the morning which was also cold.

We walked into the canyon, having been driven the first 6 ks - the drive was amazing and I learnt what a 4x4 can really do - driving across river beds full of boulders, up impossibly steep slopes and at one point up what could only be described as steps! The walk to the spring was challenging but very worthwhile.

On our departure, the new owners, in recognition of our disruptive experience, did not charge us for our activity, which we thought was most generous of them. However, the accommodation has been neglected and is now quite run down. The food was good and the staff expressed their sorrow, through song, at the departure of the previous owners. It is going to take a lot of hard work on everyone's behalf to achieve the level of excellence that we came to expect from the accommodation." 2 nights Arrived 3 Aug 2009
"A beautiful place - a surpising oasis in a stunning, rather arid, plateau and valley landscape. Marianne was a great host and we liked the way guests ate together in the evening, with a relaxed and informal atmosphere being helped along by the host.

The ownership was in the process of changing while we were there, hope the new owners don't change things too much." See all these reviews: 13n in Namibia

"The location of our room on the hillside was fantastic. However was in need of curtains and cleaning of windows.
We had a cute resident dormouse who visited the room each evening!

The new management stated he would address the overall standard of all of the rooms.
Food and conversation was some of the best on the holiday.

Great walk along the canyon." See all these reviews: 17n in Namibia

"Zebra River Lodge overnight stay"

1 night Arrived 17 Jul 2009
"A very nice thing about the place is that you can do several walks on your own, or with a good guide of the camp (if available). With a local guide you usually learn and see a lot more even in a short time.

The night of our stay Marianne had to spend some time helping another guest who had broken her wrist. Because of that she felt she hadn't been a good host for the other people and as an apology she offered our wine for free, a gesture she didn't need to do but was of course very nice.

We heard Rob and Marianne are selling the place so there will be new management in the near future." See all these reviews: 17n in Namibia; 2n in Botswana; 2n in Zambia

"Zebra River Lodge review"

3 nights Arrived 23 May 2009
"Thi s was an excellent place to start our holiday. Merle and Thom (the stand-in managers for Rob and Marriane) were wonderful hosts, warm, friendly and helpful but never intrusive. Our 'honeymoon' room (No.9) had stunning views (including from in bed!) and we liked the open-plan layout. We appreciated the self-guided walks but also found the facility to be driven out to the start-point for the walk to the springs was really useful. Justus, the guide who took us out, was very informative and pointed out a Kudu and rock-jessies on the drive.

The Namibian staff were all very friendly and we enjoyed having the opportunity to chat to them often at meal times. The food was excellent and we enjoyed our communal meals and chatting with the other guests but were also able to have 'own-time' together usually accompanied by a bottle of excellent South African wine!

Overall, this was our second favourite stop (only bettered by the jewel in the crown of our trip which was the unsurpassable Mundulea and Bruno Nebe). We would definitely like to return here in the future and would probably stop for at least 3 full days to facilitate doing more walks including including a guided one with Justus." "Zebra River Lodge review"

2 nights Arrived 23 May 2009
"This was a lovely homely lodge. Our room was lovely and had everything we needed. The hosts (Merke & Tom) were lovely and really made us feel welcome.

Dinner was lovely sitting with the hosts and other guests, and the food was all beautiful, probably the best food we had on the entire trip. The location was superb, we did the canyon walk (4-5 hours) and the views were amazing. We also did a sundowner drive and the guide was very knowledgable on the geology, animals etc of the area.

It was quite a difficult drive from the main road to the lodge (around 5km) in a normal 2x2 car. We managed it, but had to go very slowly and we could hear the car scraping on the broken up road/stones etc.

All in all, a wonderful lodge, I would definitely recommend it." See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia

"Zebra River Lodge review"

2 nights Arrived 19 May 2009
"This was a perfect place to end our holiday. The rooms were either lovely garden rooms with table and chairs outside in which to have our lunch served, it was full board here, there was fresh bread evey day and the gardens were full of lovely flowers and an abundance of birds.

We had one of the rooms at the top of some steps, (very steep) worth it though as we had great views of the mountains and a lovely balcony for sundowners, one of the owners dogs would come and join us to watch the sun go down then once it had he would go down for his dinner, it was really funny how he timed it just right.

The evening meal was fantastic and Marianne ( one of the owners) during the meal got up with the kitchen staff and sang and danced for us, great entertainment. Peter (the other owner) took us outside after our meal and treated us to some star gazing, it was very special.

This is a lovely place to go walking by yourselves, we walked to a nearby cave and one of our party braved the walk to the Quiver tree, you need to go early morning as it gets very hot later in the day.

We were totally relaxed after our 2 night stay and able then to enjoy the spectacular scenic drive back to the airport." See all these reviews: 10n in Namibia

"Just like Shangri La"

4 nights Arrived 15 May 2009
"It's quite a drive to get there, but well worth the effort; a little oasis in the middle of a vast landscape. This was our second trip to Zebra River & I hope it will not be our last.

After our first stay, we decided that we had to go back to Zebra River if ever we returned to Namibia. The 4 nights just flew by. Rob & Marianne are so welcoming, it's like home from home.

To get the most out of Zebra River, we recommend a stay of more than 2 nights - the walking is amazing & the food excellent!" See all these reviews: 14n in Namibia
