Desert Grace: Our full report
Desert Grace or The Desert Grace is located within a private reserve north of the Namib-Naukluft National Park.
As well as the scenic and remote location of the lodge itself it should be easy to visit the famous dunes around Sossusvlei and Deadvlei from here.Having opened it's doors in November 2018, we have not had the chance to visit this new lodge yet but here is what we know so far and we will look forward to experiencing it first-hand when we have the opportunity.
Around 45km north of the gate to the Namib-Naukluft National Park the lodge has 24 individual rooms set out in a linear fashion either side of a central main area. There are both four family room and 20 twin rooms available and they look to be designed in neutral fashion with flashes of soft pastel, marble and striking black and white photography adorning the walls. In addition to this there is air-conditioning/heating in each room for those scorching desert days but chilly nights. There is also a private verandah and plunge pool to really add to the feel of luxury.
The central main area is arranged around a large water feature and sculpture termed "The Arch" which is said to symbolise the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. Either side of this are modern, primarily stone structures with large glass frontages to make the most of the desert outlook. These consist of the dining room, a lounge area, curio shop and the "One Night in Namibia" bar. The design looks contemporary and well-thought through with lots of pleasing natural touches, from feather lamp shades to woven basket wall hangings.
As you would expect from a lodge in this area, the activities focus on trips to the national park to experience the famous dunes and Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. But it is also possible to participate in a drive or walk on the private Gondwana Namib Park or even to explore via E-bike. What sounds like another interesting activity on offer, is being to do a 3km night walk with a guide a UV light to search for some of the desert's nocturnal invertebrates especially scorpions.
Our view
The Desert Grace adds another 24 available rooms to an area which is getting increasingly booked up and whilst we haven't had the chance to visit it yet, it looks like a modern and stylish property. It is a little further away from the gate to the national park than some of the other lodge options, however we do not think it would be prohibitive, it just may require getting up slightly earlier for your trip to the dunes.
