Camp Sossus: Our full report
Camp Sossus opened in April 2018.
It is a tented camp in the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib area in the Neuhof Nature Reserve. With a firm focus on sustainability and quality guiding, it offers a unique experience in a private area close to one of Namibia's most iconic destinations.Formerly Sossus under Canvas we believe this is an exciting option in the Sossusvlei area. We have long known the experienced team behind it and whilst we have not yet visited ourselves we trust this will be a well-run operation with an emphasis on exceptional guiding.
We understand that Camp Sossus has eight Meru tents including two family units. Each tent will have an open-air en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and bucket shower.
There is a central lounge and dining area and a fireplace where guests can gather. We understand the camp is comfortable but perhaps a little more basic than some other options in the area – the focus here is on a real “under canvas” wilderness experience and guiding rather than luxury.
As a protection from the prevailing east winds, the tents will have natural stonewalls on the eastern side. The roofs will be built from recycled oil drums and recycled wood and metal will be used for the interiors too perhaps lending a more solid feel than the semi permanent design alludes to. The visual appearance of the camp aims to blend in with its environment and to be nearly invisible from a distance.
Using solar power and recycled materials for the construction will minimize the camp's environmental impact. Hence as with its sister camp Camp Doros, Camp Sossus is aiming to be amongst the most eco-friendly camps in Namibia.
Activities at Camp Sossus focus on visits to Sossusvlei and nature drives in the private Neuhof Nature Reserve. A private guide will take guests on game drives and nature walks or arrange some stargazing or desert pool experiences. Further options include trips to a plateau with striking views over the Namib Desert, a multi-day walking safari or a night in the sleep out under the stars. The location also offers great possibilities for hot air ballooning and helicopter or fixed wing scenic flights.
