"Not what we expected. A blow-out on the way to Walvis Bay and a rapidly approaching high tide put the trip in jeopardy. So the short stay with flamingoes in Walvis Bay was not long enough (we didn't get the promised return).

The day then turned into more of an extreme 4x4 day than a serene nature adventure. Driving outward through the surf and back down the slip face of huge dunes was exciting but we didn't get far into Sandwich Harbour or have time for the nature on show.

Good crowd made it fun but wouldn't do it again if it was the same. Guide was stressed out and the whole thing rushed and disappointing." Read more about this whole safari

"This was a well-designed trip, with a competent and personable guide who enjoyed showing off his impressive driving skills. Sandwich Harbour is beautiful and the view from the top of the dune where we had a tasty lunch was stunning. The big problem was lack of space and comfort in the Land Rover, which technically had seats for 4 passengers, but with 3 large adults in the back it was a very tight squeeze. As most of the day is spent in the vehicle and the ride very bumpy in places, this really spoiled the day for me." Read more about this whole safari

"We spent an excellent day with Turnstone Tours in Sandwich Harbor. Burger (?surname?) was extremely good. He promised us a day of drama and adventure and certainly delivered on both. His expert driving allowed us to travel along the beach beside the dunes, safe from the ebbing tide, whilst he gave us a thoroughly fascinating explanation of the terrain, the commercial comings and goings of the bay, the animals, sea life, birds and of course the dunes. We certainly enjoyed a spell of 'extreme driving' over the dunes.

Burger and Achim expertly laid out a delicious picnic for us which we very much enjoyed.

"Kai - our guide and driver for the day was a fount of knowledge and very good company. He dealt with a flat tyre with ease and added just enough danger to an exhilerating drive through the dunes on our way back. He was absolutely brilliant!

We were lucky in our wild life sightings too - with terns of many kinds, hawks, pelicans and of course flamingoes being just a few.
The carcass of a whale - before it had begun to smell was also an amazing sight.

"We had high expectations as we'd done a similar trip three years ago and this was even better. Berger was helpful, informative and a good host. Highlights of the trip were:
Driving along the narrow strip between the dunes and the ocean which disappears at high tide,
The climb up the dunes at Sandwich Harbour and the view of the bay,
Driving through the dunes on the way back and sliding down the roaring dunes.
The sightings of springbok and a pair of black backed jackals.

Lunch of springbok lasagna was excellent. We loved the red colours of some of the sand (garnet granules we understand) and the feeling of emptiness.
