"Beached Whale"

20 Jun 2015
"Kai - our guide and driver for the day was a fount of knowledge and very good company. He dealt with a flat tyre with ease and added just enough danger to an exhilerating drive through the dunes on our way back. He was absolutely brilliant!

We were lucky in our wild life sightings too - with terns of many kinds, hawks, pelicans and of course flamingoes being just a few.
The carcass of a whale - before it had begun to smell was also an amazing sight.

I would really recommend this trip to anyone with a spare day in Swakopmund." Read more about this whole safari

"Wonderful trip to Sandwich Harbour"

Based at Villa Margherita on 7 May 2015
"We had high expectations as we'd done a similar trip three years ago and this was even better. Berger was helpful, informative and a good host. Highlights of the trip were:
Driving along the narrow strip between the dunes and the ocean which disappears at high tide,
The climb up the dunes at Sandwich Harbour and the view of the bay,
Driving through the dunes on the way back and sliding down the roaring dunes.
The sightings of springbok and a pair of black backed jackals.

Lunch of springbok lasagna was excellent. We loved the red colours of some of the sand (garnet granules we understand) and the feeling of emptiness.

A truly memorable experience. We loved it." Read more about this whole safari

"Sandwich Harbour with Turnstone Tours"

Based at Cornerstone Guesthouse on 30 Apr 2015
"We enjoyed the tour along the coast south of Swakopamund. The guide was good natured and informative.

It was nice to visit such a dramatic, empty coast and see the flamingos and pelicans.

We could have never driven their on our own." Read more about this whole safari

"Sand dune drive"

3 Apr 2015
"I have expected a bit more from the trip. But the kids enjoyed very much playing in the sand. We were not allowed to get closer to the bird sanctuary. But have seen a lot of flamingos in Walvis Bay.

Burger has found oyster fossils in the sand and has shown us some lizards which was a great experience." Read more about this whole safari

"A good trip."

Based at Cornerstone Guesthouse on 26 Sep 2014
"We were picked up promptly by a very helpful guide/driver in a comfortable 4 x 4 vehicle. First stop was at Walvis Bay to see an amazing number of flamingos and to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the coastal path. Then on to Sandwich Harbour with views of the salt-processing plant along the way and a sometimes hairy ride among reed beds to reach the sandy terrain of the bay where the huge sand-dunes meet the sea. We left the vehicle at this point and walked towards the lagoon.

It was possible to climb the dunes for a better view of the lagoon although we decided against this! We were disappointed not to see many birds but this did not detract too much from the overall enjoyment of the trip. Our guide then astounded us by providing a hot lunch (courtesy of a microwave oven secreted in the back of the van) and soft drinks served round a table with comfortable chairs - most enjoyable! Our guide was excellent and a very good driver and deposited us back at our guesthouse after a most enjoyable trip." Read more about this whole safari

"Turnstone to Sanwich"

Based at Cornerstone Guesthouse on 25 Sep 2015
"This was our first meeting with Bruno and he proved as informative as the wildlife {particularly the birdlife} and scenery were spectacular. Sandwich Harbour is an amazing place with a curious history and we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

It was cool and windy when we were there which made the our dune climbing much more interesting than it might have been but the views were well worth the effort. Bruno's driving, whether to avoid the quicksands or to traverse the dunes, was impressive - as was the hearty lunch." Read more about this whole safari

"Spectacular scenery and birds"

Based at Beach Lodge on 14 Sep 2014
"We were very disappointed that our guide, John, was poorly informed about the bird and wildlife and generally not sensitive to our needs. The Landover was very old and with four visitors and a driver made for a very cramped and uncomfortable drive. He was a good driver and careful to check the safety of driving along the beach while the tide was low. The lasagne lunch that had been kept warm all morning was uninspired.

The scenery, birdlife and animals we saw on the way were spectacular and unforgettable. A better guide would have made the trip brilliant." Read more about this whole safari

"Relaxing day at Sandwich Harbour."

Based at Lagoon Lodge on 15 Aug 2014
"Sean Braine, our guide, was a wealth of information while being very laid back, providing a relaxing enjoyable day. He spent the time to find different geckos, and bring to our attention many other little creatures, telling us much about the birds and plants we saw. It would have been nice to spend longer than one-hour at the harbour itself, but Sean was concerned about the tides despite other groups still being there (maybe because our vehicle was making a horrible chattering noise?), although we did spend plenty of time in the environment both to-and-from. All-in-all it was a pleasant and informative day, which I would recommend to anyone interested in this unique environment." Read more about this whole safari
