My Oct 2024 trip
Botswana and 1 other country between 20 Oct 2024 and 30 Oct 2024
"Our trip was great and I am very satisfied with everything. The advice and general knowledge when planning the trip was very good and everyone at Expert Africa was super helpful.
I followed obviously their recommendations of camps and was very impressed with both but the timing of the stays and the rhythm of the holiday was managed well too. The travel on the ground was very good, flying between camps and being driven over the border.
Advice on tipping was very helpful and on what to pack. I didn’t realise we had to pay cash (US$) at the border between Botswana and Zimbabwe though and that did cause a detour to find an ATM and a risk that they wouldn’t like local currency, but it worked out well in the end.
Expert Africa doesn’t usually book your international flights which I would have preferred as it took me a long time to work out times, connections and prices.
Also, Expert Africa did not initially book the activities at Victoria Falls although when I struggled to deal directly with a local company, they did step in and manage it all very well.
I would suggest that be handled too internally as it’s best to book early and you will get a better response as a company and I just wanted reassurance that it was all booked and organised."

Karangoma
"Karangoma review"

"Karangoma is an extraordinary camp! It is located very remotely and uniquely in a private reserve NE of the Moremi where there is simply no one and nothing but miles of wilderness.
The camp was very quiet and for two out of the four nights we were there we were alone and we were thoroughly spoilt. It feels like staying with friends not in a normal camp. There is no airstrip (at the time of writing this) and we were flown in by helicopter which was thrilling and made the whole experience very special for my teenagers!
The camp is extremely new, smart, exquisitely designed with all the latest mod cons and fittings and very chic and high end design. The staff were very efficient and charming, all bending over back wards to meet our every need. The food was very impressive and well presented.
Our two guides were fantastic, always informative and knowledgeable but also totally in control of the safari, knowing where to go, tracking lion, speeding to follow lion and cheetah for us to ensure the best possible experience. We enjoyed long morning and afternoon drives, sunset drinks every day, dawn tea, bush lunch where we swam in the Okavango river, had a barbecue lunch set up by the river, went on mekoro trips and did a walking safari too.
Temperatures were over 40 degrees everyday at the end of the hot season which was very difficult for a pale blond family from the UK and both my teenage sons struggled in the middle of the day in the camp and one had heat stroke I’m sure, but that was no one’s fault and the staff were very helpful and accommodated a more gentle pace when we asked for it. The pool (overlooking a watering hole) proved indispensable for cooling off!
We saw monkeys and elephant and even lion from the camp which was great fun. A highlight were the sunsets over natural pools filled with water lilies and hippos and our guide giving my son photography lessons! Also, seeing a leopard only a few metres away severval times was a privilege.
It feels like a dream now I’m home and it was unforgettable, I highly recommend this camp."

528 Victoria Falls

"528 Victoria Falls was a good base for exploring the Falls themselves and the town.
It is a colourful comfortable B&B where the staff were helpful and friendly. We had a large family room which was good and breakfast was great.
They were very good at calling taxis and helping us plan our activities."

It is small and exclusive. The wooden buildings are all built on stilts with a long walkways between rooms, it is stylish and fun, the rooms or tents were extremely comfortable, huge beds, sofas, desk, bathroom with bath, indoor and outdoor showers, it was more than I hoped for with clever chic fixtures and fittings too.
The communal areas were the same and we enjoyed chatting to the staff, eating with the other guests and the fire pit and stars were fabulous. We appreciated the pool after a hot morning on safari which seemed very luxurious considering the location and water shortage.
The guides took us out in very small groups but we were mainly alone as a family and the boats were great fun with a viewing deck above and loads of drinks. We saw a huge abundance of birds, elephants, lechwe, hippos, monkeys, baboons and crocodiles. The guides were charming and very knowledgeable and really did their best to read what you wanted to see and do and managed our time efficiently.
We tried fishing but were unsuccessful although my teenage sons were very keen. It was a nice change for them to be active after hours in the boat. We asked for a mekoro boat ride but in the deep Delta is is considered dangerous I suspect and so a short trip was squeezed into the journey back to the airstrip, it was on a fairly boring tiny channel of very shallow water with different younger guides and it was a bit disappointing.
We were also walked through a local village which made me feel uncomfortable and made to look at their basket wares and other souvenirs which were on sale for a high price. It was interesting to learn about the village and understand how is is supported by the state but it felt voyeuristic.
Overall, though it was wonderful and I would highly recommend it."
