More about Anton...
I grew up in Zimbabwe, with parents who are huge advocates of the natural world. We spent all our holidays exploring the countryside – so much so that by the time I was 12 we had been to every national park in the country.

This ignited my passion for travel and the wilderness, and led me to do a degree in wildlife conservation, which in turn drew me into working in Zambia as a safari guide and wildlife researcher. Realising this was to be my lifelong passion, I took the opportunity to backpack around the world with my partner before we dedicated our lives to travel and conservation. Our trip took us from Bali to China, Australia and New Zealand before sailing the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. With the globetrotting itch partially scratched, we both dived back into the books and the Land Rover seat and became full-time safari guides, working in some of South Africa’s world-famous lodges.

The beauty of guiding is the working cycle: every six weeks we had two weeks leave, and we would explore a new destination each time. Like this, we soon fell in love with Botswana, doing multiple trips there, including our honeymoon. On Okavango boat trips, in luxury fly-in camps and at remote sleep-outs miles from the nearest person, surrounded by the annual zebra migration, we slowly uncovered Botswana’s secrets.

I moved to the UK in 2014 and have been working in the Africa safari industry since then. This has given me multiple opportunities to explore the continent more deeply, from Tanzania’s great migration, to trekking with the Samburu in northern Kenya, canoeing the Zambezi, sleeping under the vast skies of the Kalahari and touring the remote islands of the Seychelles, Mozambique and Madagascar.

My passion for Southern Africa always brings me back, in 2023 I saw the perfect opportunity to join Expert Africa. I have been incredibly lucky with my travels across Africa: let me use my personal expertise to help create the perfect adventure for you.

Having the opportunity to travel during both the 'green' and peak seasons in the same year was truly fascinating, allowing for a unique comparison of how wildlife adapts to the seasons. One of the most striking differences between the two trips was the sheer number of elephants seen on this latest journey. I had the incredible experience of visiting two underground hides, where the elephant action in particular was non stop. At other camps, there were numerous multi-species sightings. I watched in awe as a Roan Antelope crossed a floodplain, passing buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, warthogs, impala, and tsessebe along the way. The highlight of the trip, however, was witnessing a pride of 12 lions with a buffalo kill, while a scan of the horizon with binoculars revealed a staggering 160 elephants. This late in the dry season truly stands out as the ideal time for big game sightings and increases the opportunity to see some of the seldom seen species like Aardwolf, Selous Mongoose and Pangolin.

Botswana in the green season is not to be overlooked. A plethora of birdlife and big game, predator actions, and interactions make for diverse sightings, ranging from honey badgers to wild dogs, African wild cats to cheetah hunts, and multiple leopard and lion sightings. It was the smaller animals that stole the show on this trip. Each evening, the cacophony of frogs, migrant swallows, bee-eaters, rollers, and raptors, all taking advantage of the emerging elates. The Okavango was filled with activity, and a G&T in hand while watching a distant evening rainstorm develop (occasionally donning a poncho) added to the drama of the green season safari!

I was fortunate to visit Zambia at the end of the dry season, when the wildlife concentrations are at their best along the rivers, South Luangwa predators did not disappoint with daily sightings and I particularly enjoyed the walks from some of the camps. But the highlight was certainly Lower Zambezi where we managed to see so much wildlife and yet it was the canoe trip down the "Discovery Chanel" and while at a different camp fishing, where I managed to catch my life time best 18lb tiger fish!

I was really pleased to have the opportunity to use my years of guiding experience and travel across Botswana to help update this guide, especially the wildlife section. The timing was perfect – I’d just visited Botswana before working on this.
