My Sep 2024 trip
Kenya between 7 Sep 2024 and 1 Oct 2024
"What can I say? My best friend of 65 years said that she had never seen me at a loss for words about anything before.
This trip was beyond beyond. I now understand why people go back time and time again. The animals, the people, and the land get under your skin and into your soul. I told my brother that the only way to describe it is that it is everything that is real. Animals living their lives the way they are intended to. A good day for a cheetah hunting and catching a young gazelle, not a good day for the gazelle. The circle of life and all that that means.
To witness: a large elephant family moving across a huge dry lake; seeing hundreds of thousands of wildebeest, elephants, zebras, cape buffalo, all together on the move; meet and see Craig the Tusker, that magnificent old elephant; and giraffes nibbling on tree tops; there truly are no words...it is all emotion.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for everything, for every little detail and putting us into the care of so many exemplary people in Kenya.
Suggestions to help us improve our trips or our service:

We were very pleased this traveller rated her stay so highly. Other guests have previously complained about noise from the entertainment in certain rooms. The hotel apologised and promised to address this, and Expert Africa will be trying to avoid booking those rooms in future.
Nairobi Elephant Orphanage visit
"Nairobi Elephant Orphanage visit review"
14 Sep 2024 • Morning excursion
It is so wonderful to see an orphanage in the city.
The elephants all looked extremely well cared for and our introduction to them was lovely.

Nairobi Giraffe Centre visit
"Nairobi Giraffe Centre visit review"
14 Sep 2024 • Morning excursion
This was a lovely experience, and wonderful to see within a city.
I felt that the efforts to attract the giraffes to the visitor walkway by banging pails of food incessantly were unnecessary.
I would have preferred allowing the giraffes to have the freedom to come and go as they pleased.

Tortilis Camp
"Tortilis Camp review"
3 nights
Arrived

"For a first visit to the Amboseli, Tortilis was a wonderful experience.
Only one thing marred our stay, which was that several of us in the group were quite badly bitten by insects in our beds. I believe that this was reported, but I do want to reiterate it. I am not sure what the protocol is when this happens; however, I would hope that camp management would take a good look at current practices and to update how bug management is handled.
That out of the way, everything else at Tortilis was amazing. The staff was wonderful. The chefs outdid themselves, and their Pastry Chef is truly outstanding. Meals were always very very good.
I would have prefered our Bush Breakfasts to be laid out and take what you want as opposed to box breakfasts. Not everyone would eat everything in the boxes, and I fear that some of that food was wasted. Our one sit down and omlette station bush breakfast with other visitors, was the best.
Our guides, Dixon and Chege (I hope I spelled that correctly), were beyond excellent. Both gentlemen were so well informed on the wildlife, plants, rocks, terrain, everything. I would not hesitate to travel with them again. We saw so many animals, including Craig (!), and were truly blown away.
To add to animal sightings: We saw ground squirrels twice."

We were delighted these travellers enjoyed Tortilis so much, and that they rated the food and the guiding so highly. However, we were very concerned about the insect bites. We only heard about this problem after the group had left the camp, however Tortilis did a a detailed investigation as soon as we alerted them. They couldn't trace the source, and no other guests outside this group were affected. These travellers spent some time on the ground photographing Craig, the big tusker, and it seems possible that some of them picked up tiny "pepper ticks". These minuscule, newly hatched ticks, can start to bite hours after hitching a ride, and can stay on skin and clothes for days afterwards.

Tangulia Mara

"The Tangulia Mara was an excellent camp. Having the wildlife so close was a dream. The view over the river and water hole was wonderful. Hearing the animals walking up past our tent was very cool. One concern was the door to our tent; it did not seem to be particularly secure as it did not close tightly.
Staff were wonderfully attentive and food was very very good and so much offered. Our bush breakfasts were delicious and plentiful.
Being in the Mara for the Migration was a dream - more than I can express. Hundreds of thousands of animals together - amazing!
Our guides were very good and I appreciated the cooler of drinks onboard the trucks everyday. I did not enjoy the lack of or condition of the "roads" we used to get into the camp; however, I also understand that to make "proper" roads disturbs nature. It was a very minor issue.
To add to sightings: 1 x Genet; 1 x Monitor Lizard; 2 x Jackals; 5-6 x Topi Antelope"

Kicheche Bush Camp
"Kicheche Bush Camp review"
3 nights
Arrived
21 Sep 2024
"Ahhh Kicheche... What can I say? I was so sad to leave. I was so totally happy at Kicheche.
Even knowing that lions and hyenas were wandering around not far away did not make me want to leave. I felt totally safe the whole time we were there.
Watching zebras, elephants, and giraffes out in the grasslands around the tents was very surreal. Our tent was one of the furthest away from the lodge and was just perfect. Brian did an excellent job of preparing our rooms at night...my hot water bottle lasted well into the next morning.
Staff were excellent. We felt very cared for including our water intake management! William was wonderful at mealtimes, and it was so nice to have mangers Dede (I hope spelled correctly) and Anne sit down with us at mealtimes to share our experiences with. They were very accomodating for food preferences and were happy to provide an alternative. The chefs were very knowledgable and the food was exemplary. Bush Breakfasts were perfect in every way from the fruit and yogourt to breakfast burritoes to excellent coffee!
Our game drive guides were also great. Charles and Patrick have such a great rapport and patience with the guests and staff, they made us all feel very safe and cared for. I would not hesitate to recommend them for any guiding.
Additional sightings: Coke's Hartebeast x 4; Jackals x 8; Bat-eared Fox x 1"

The Emakoko
"The Emakoko review"
1 night
Arrived
24 Sep 2024
"The Emakoko was fine for the daytime we had there. We did not have time to do a game drive, although we did drive through the Nairobi National Park.
Our room was ok. The sink was cracked and leaked and there were ants in the bath tub. I did not feel that the room was used very much, as cleaning was a bit poor. I do not think I would want to stay in this room overnight.
Our meals were good and staff were very friendly and helpful. Our driver was excellent, staying with us at the airport until we passed the initial security check. Thank you for this."

Feedback response
We were pleased that these guests found the staff and their driver-guide at The Emakoko so helpful. However we were disappointed to read about the condition of their day room, which is not the norm at all. All the rooms at The Emakoko are in constant use, whether as day rooms or for overnight stays. The lodge owners were shocked to receive this report about the room’s cleanliness. They sent their sincere apologies and took immediate steps with the member of staff responsible to ensure that rooms are always made ready and in perfect condition before the arrival of guests.
They also apologised for the sink’s cracked enamel, but the leak was caused by a faulty bottle trap underneath the basin. After receiving this feedback, the lodge took a full inventory of the washbasins in every room, and subsequently made several minor repairs and improvements.
Small ants are not uncommon visitors and The Emakoko do their best to keep them at bay, but they prefer not to use insecticides etc. They were very sorry overall for the unsatisfactory appearance and condition of this room, and they thanked the guests for bringing it to their attention.

The only reason I give it a "Good" is because our last night, a Saturday night, the music and noise from the party down stairs and the bars next door was all night long and very loud. Sleep was difficult and we had an early wake up to catch our flight.
Meals were reasonable and very good."
