My Sep 2022 trip
Tanzania between 3 Sep 2022 and 25 Sep 2022
The ideal length of your stay should be 4 nights in one lodge. So you have the opportunity to see a lot of different animals. On some days we only saw birds and on the last day of our stay in the lodge we saw the lepard. If your budget will allow you 4 nights, we hardly recommend that.
We also loved the different parcs we visited. Every parc is different in landscape and animals which you can spot easy."

Katambuga House

Oliver's Camp
"Oliver's Camp review"
The first night we were the only guests. They cared very good about us. We had the meals at different places in the camp. Breakfast in the bush, lunch also, an other breakfast at the sundowner place and dinner always near the fire.
We had different activities. We had game drives, an evening drive and a bush walk.
Unfortunatly there are a lot of tsetse flies, so we got a lot of bites. We prepared better for the next camps!"
The Highlands
"The Highlands review"
First: It is a very long ride from the airstrip to the camp (2 1/2 hour). The roads are very bad.
Second: We were not lucky and had a lot of rain. It was very cold in the rooms. They had a fireplace, that put the room to a nice temperature, but later on the fire went off in the night, so it was very cold (3 degrees celsius in the morning). Of course they told us, that we can phone someone, to put the fire on again, but we think that it is not very nice to get someone out to our room, just for lighting the fire again.
Third: Some of the staff couldn't speak Englisch very well, so it was sometimes difficult to understand what they said.
Fourth: Our guide was more than a driver. He just took us to the places we wanted to go and then there was not much more he did for us. We made the hiking to the Empakaai and to the waterfalls, but he never went with us. We saw other guides who did so. The drive in the crater was ok.
At least the visit of the Massai village wasn't so nice. It was about 60 Dollars we have to pay for and we stayed there one hour, just walking around a little. At the end there were a lot of women presenting their stuff and we were told before, that we have to bring a little money for buying something. The prices weren't small, one little plate, where you can put your wineglass on, was 10 Dollars."
The Highlands is situated at approximately 8000 ft above sea level and so it does get cold at night. The camp does its best to keep the rooms warm by providing thick duvets, additional covers and there is a log burner in each room. Guests are provided with firelighters and extra wood, so if they do not want to ask one of the staff to top the fire up, they are able to add fuel to the fire themselves.
The guide should have accompanied these guests on all their activities – including the hike of Empakaai. This has been raised with the guide trainer and lodge manager, who will address this with the guide to ensure he is more actively involved in the all-round guest experience.
With regards to the disappointing Masaai boma visit, The Highlands have commented that they strictly prohibit any souvenir sales in the bomas that their guests visit. The village already benefits significantly from support from the camp and so they should not be trying to sell goods to our guests. They are going to bring this up with the village leaders to reiterate this and prevent it from happening again. If guests would like to buy something then they are able to do so at the 'mamas market' but nothing should be pushed during the boma visit.

We also didn't like, that the first information we were given was about the tip we have to pay.
They suggested a tip for the campstaff, the ranger, the trackers and the guide. Each 10 Dollars per day and person. That will be 80 Dollars for a couple per day. That will be 250 Dollars for a three night stay. We paid a lot for this journey and it is not my duty to pay the salary of the staff. Nomad camps should do that."
Ikuka Safari Camp
"Ikuka Safari Camp review"
The rooms were very big and every room has a nice view from the top of the hill.
The decoration of the camp is marvellous.
The food was excellent. We didn't expect such a good chief in that camp. Every meal was really great and very nice decorated on the plate.
We loved the big common table."
