"Kuthengo Camp review"
As a solo traveller I was hoping meal times would be around a large table with everyone seated - instead it was a table for one for every meal. Not a problem at all (I like my me time) but it would have been nice to have shared experiences over evening dinner at least.
The staff were marvellous - both the camp managers (Casper and Yolande) and staff. My guide was Eneson who was excellent and a fantastic spotter. I went on a boat safari which was great - experiencing wildlife from a different perspective and terrain. I was the only guest on my last day in camp and was treated like a queen and felt very spoilt - table for one on the edge of the river by candlelight. I was very sad to leave.
The only area for improvement is the food - don't get me wrong - it was great but not of the standard of other RP lodges. I would have welcomed lighter choices for lunch (rather than pizza or fried chicken) - I got the impression that the camp is still trying to tick every box completely (late opening for the season and new managers). Well, they are already ticking all boxes - just the food experience needs to be raised.
I would most definitely go back - even if dining was still at a table for 1 and the food choices did not change!" See all these reviews: 9n in Malawi
"Kuthengo Camp review small and intimate"
However service on the whole is very good and staff all happy to please!
The location beside the river is again beautiful but very different from Mkulumadzi.
It is mostly woodland in both Majete and Liwonde but much more open spaces at Liwonde and so easier to see some animals." See all these reviews: 9n in Malawi

"Wonderful location at Kuthengo Camp"
The tents were very well equipped, with an outdoor shower, with game sitting just outside.
The management were away during half of our visit, but the staff were excellent in running the camp on their own. We were the only guests for 2 of our 3 nights stay, giving us a wonderful experience. A lovely pool for cooling off.
The food was very good and as usual in Africa, too much was available.
Some good game viewing with an excellent guide, although the black rhino remained elusive. Wonderful boat rides along the Shire River, with great viewing of elephant and colourful birds. No walking was offered.
Requested Sightings: See below There are currently no Giraffe in the Park
Other Sightings: Spotted Eagle Owl, Bushbuck, Genet, Buffalo, Waterbuck, White tailed mongoose, Kudu, Liechtenstein Hartebeest, Reedbuck, Zebra, many interesting birds." See all these reviews: 16n in Malawi
"Great staff but needs organising"
The manger and his partner were rarely seen and were conspicuous by there absence most of the time. They did not even turn out at the end of drives or to say goodbye. The rest of the staff did. Such a contrast to the previous lodge
The family tent is not well designed with only one toilet in the main tent but none in the children's. They had to get out of bed unzip the door and then walk across a raised but open walk way and then unzip our tent and go to our toilet. Teenage girls need bathroom and toilet facilities on hand. The one time we spoke to the lodge manager and asked for a move produced prompt response and the girls were moved to a tent of their own.
The weather was poor and the loges and dining areas had to have there walls secured hence there was often no view.
Overall fantastic staff and guides but a rather soulless place made worse by inattentive managers." See all these reviews: 12n in Malawi; 3n in Mozambique
"New bush camp by the Shire River"
We enjoyed dining under the stars with the other guests and the camp managers Jason and Steegan, followed by sessions around the camp fire. The food was ok, although breakfast was very limited. Lunch and dinner were ok, but (especially at dinner) portions were on the small side.
Whilst we were there for 4 nights, the camp had only 1 safari vehicle and 1 guide, for potentially up to 10 guests. Fortunately, there were never more than 2 other guests during our stay, so this did not become a problem for us. The boat for river safaris was also out of action. However, Jason arranged for a boat from another Lodge to enable us to have a morning river safari. The birdlife along the river was spectacular.
The mopane woodland of the Liwonde National Park has more open areas than the Majete NP, so that it was better for wildlife photography than Majete. However, animal density was often rather low, but we had some marvellous sightings of large herds of both sable and roan antelopes, and a 50-strong herd of elephants. It is unrealistic to expect to see big cats or rhinos in Liwonde.
The travel time between Kuthengo and Blantyre airport is 4 hours, even with a very fast driver." See all these reviews: 9n in Malawi
