Nairobi to Sarara by road & light aircraft
It's an hour's drive to Wilson Airport for your flight over the Central Highlands to the arid north of Kenya. A guide from Sarara will collect you by 4WD, first looping north towards Ethiopia, then west through the bush towards the imposing Matthews Range, arrive in camp after a couple of hours.
Sarara
First set up as a mobile camp in 1997, Sarara was rebuilt in 2008 as a permanent luxury tented camp. It lies on the edge of the Mathews Range in the Namunyak Conservancy, which covers more than 340km² and has a variety of wildlife. The name Sarara means 'meeting place': the mountains meet here, so water is always available, and local people assemble to dig wells and collect water. With its combination of luxury and adventure, this is one of northern Kenya's finest and most memorable places to stay. The new Sarara Treehouses camp is nearby, nestled in the forest, with its own swimming pool and lounge with a magnificent view across the forest and mountains.

"Beautiful camp, excellent food, excellent staff...The sunrises...oh my!"

We loved Sarara. The owners clearly care a lot about conservation and the community and a stay here feels like a very worthwhile exposure to the traditional lifestyle of northern Kenya's semi-desert regions, while striking a perfect balance with guests' expectations. The camp is very comfortable but doesn't overwhelm its natural environment. Nature, luxury, wildlife and conservation are all incorporated in an uncontrived package. And the hosts are charming. Sarara to the Maasai Mara by road & air
Today's 4–5hr journey starts with a return to Kalama Airstrip ready for your flight over the Great Rift Valley (sometimes stopping at Wilson Airport) to the Maasai Mara; look out for giraffes and elephants as you descend. Your private guide from Serian Nkorombi will drive you the final leg to camp.
Serian Nkorombo
The very small Serian Nkorombo is located in the heart of the Maasai Mara National Reserve on the east bank of the Mara River. With just 6 tents, this small bush camp was formerly a seasonal camp known as 'Nkorombo Mobile'. It is part of independent owner Alex Walker's Serian group. There are two larger and more luxurious sister camps just outside the reserve in the Mara North Conservancy and others in the Serengeti in Tanzania.

"Fabulous location by the river"
Mr P.fromCambridgeArrived 13 Sep 2022, 3 nights
This is one of the reserve's most intimate small camps and its comfortably traditional, low-key style makes it one of the most environmentally integrated camps in the reserve. The striking riverbank location is ideal if you want an impressive experience during the migration, and the private vehicle and guide for every group is a major bonus, but the location also makes for a noticeably busy area when you leave camp, especially in the high season. Game drive into the Maasai Mara NR
After breakfast, enjoy a game drive across the plains of the Maasai Mara National Reserve to meet up with a driver-guide from Serian main camp, usually at the Musiara Gate. From here, you'll continue across the Mara North Conservancy to reach Serian by lunchtime, watching for wildlife throughout.
Serian
Perched quite high above the Mara River, where it cuts a broad valley along the western border of the Mara North Conservancy, Serian Camp is a small independent tented camp, owned by the established safari guide Alex Walker. It has two sister 'Serian' camps in the Mara ecosystem – one directly across the river and one inside the Maasai Mara National Reserve – and there are others in the Serengeti in Tanzania.

"Very good throughout."

Although Serian is a small camp, its physical extent and elevated position give it the air of a grander set-up without it ever feeling pretentious. Both the guest tents and the beautiful central area with its river views are a delight. We thought the hospitality here was exceptional and the private driver-guiding is a real bonus – the costs of which admittedly are built into the relatively high rates. There is a bit of a drive out of the river valley into the better wildlife areas of Mara North. See our full report on Serian
