"This was the best family vacation we’ve ever taken.
We absolutely loved every single day. Everything was seamlessly arranged by Expert Africa."

Tortilis Camp
"Tortilis Camp review"

Arrived

"We love Tortilis Camp! I would highly recommend it to anyone.
The setting is gorgeous, the rooms are well appointed but what makes it really special is the hospitality. The food and drink are delicious (they are proud of their large on-site garden producing great fresh fruit and vegetables).
The bush breakfast, sundowners and all the hospitality offered by the staff made it really special, in addition to fabulous wildlife viewing."

Basecamp Eagle View
"Basecamp Eagle View review"

"The best things about the camp were the beautiful setting, on a hill with an expansive view of varied terrain and lots of wildlife (although far away). There is a watering hole on site which is also visited by wildlife and because the camp isn’t fenced you will feel close to the animals (and will need a Masai guide to walk to and from your tent after dark.)
We had the best guide - Manfred Narrida, who is legendary for his skills in wildlife sighting and is a very informative, friendly guide. We saw absolutely everything (large herds, baby animals, all the big cats including leopard, and a lion kill right in front of us.) we enjoyed night drives and a bush walk in the beautiful Naboisho conservancy.
The downside of this camp is the awful food. We were hungry and dissatisfied the entire time. Even the coffee was bad. There was also an infestation of flies in the dining room, I suppose because of the location but the property should screen in the dining room. The staff is so nice and tries to be accommodating but I wouldn’t return because the meals were so unpleasant.
The rooms were fine except very dark, especially the bathroom."

Feedback response
We are very sorry to hear about these travellers experiences at Basecamp Eagle View, specifically with regards to the quality of the food and flies in the dining area. We have spoken to the camp regarding these issues and they are investigating the situation, with the aim to raise the standard of their menu going forwards. The camp is also planning a significant refurbishment in the coming year, with plans to instal screens to prevent flies accessing the dining area. We'll continue to work with the camp and monitor improvements.

"It’s interesting to experience the hotel that was featured in Hotel Rwanda, and we had a very nice lunch there.
The pool looked nice although we had no time to swim, and the location is pretty, in a lovely residential area. Otherwise the hotel rooms are pretty average."

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

"The staff at this property could not have been nicer or more helpful.
This is a very basic place, however. Dark and unattractive, the rooms are individual cabins heated by a space heater and wood fireplace. The food isn’t great and there’s no wifi in the rooms.
The bathrooms are large with great showers, and the hotel will rent jackets, gloves, gaiters for the gorilla hike.
This is a very basic, rustic accommodation with a very friendly, helpful and accommodating staff."

Kigali Tour and Genocide Memorial Visit
"Kigali Tour and Genocide Memorial Visit review"
2 Jan 2024 • All-day excursion
This is a fascinating and well curated museum.
It is very difficult to understand the Rwandan genocide but it finally made sense after a visit to this museum, which traces in detail the historic roots of the divisions and propaganda which led to this terrible event. It is also an excellent insight into other genocides and transitional justice issues.
The memorial and film are very moving.

Gorilla Trekking Safari
"Gorilla Trekking Safari review"
3 Jan 2024 • Morning excursion
This was an incredible experience. It was thrilling from the very beginning as our trackers hacked a path into the jungle and we paused from time to time so our guide could explain the evidence that we were getting close to a gorilla family.
We had a fascinating hour with the gorillas. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable, explained the behaviour, diets, family group, etc. He was even able to alert us to get ready for a chest pounding. They really know these gorillas.
I wasn’t prepared for how muddy and dense the jungle would be. I would caution anyone to wear old waterproof clothing, boots, gaiters and garden gloves (to push aside thorny plants). It is also mandatory to wear a surgical mask, which adds to the challenges of photographing these quick moving and shy animals.
A once in a lifetime experience!

"This is a beautiful, elegant colonial era hotel.
The service is gracious and the food is excellent. It’s centrally located so very easy to walk to interesting city sights.
I would highly recommend this property."

Also the gift shop is well stocked and well priced. The best thing was the Christmas Eve dinner and the gorgeous choir that sang in the dining room. One of the most beautiful Christmas experiences ever.
The downside is the hotel is not very posh, the bathrooms are small, and although rooms overlook the Safari park, there is a road in between and unless you have a good camera/binoculars you won’t see much. Also it would be nearly impossible to walk anywhere from the hotel."
