"Gorgeous camp, lackluster safari experience"
As far as the park and the wildlife, I would caution anyone considering Tarangire that the guides are required to stay on the main park roads, so we were unable to get very close to any of the animals. We did have good elephant sightings, as they are extremely common and easy to see in Tarangire. There were many other vehicles in the park, and overall it didn't have a very wild feel to it.
On our first morning game drive, rather than stopping for a breakfast in the bush, our guide drove us to a designated national park picnic area, which was paved and developed, with a large parking lot and a bunch of ugly plastic picnic tables. There were 5 or 6 other groups there having breakfast there as well. All of the vehicles at Kuro Camp are fully enclosed with a pop-top roof, rather than the open-sided vehicles that we had been promised. Our guide seemed rather bored and uninterested in guiding, and he ended up functioning more as a driver than as a guide, so our wildlife experience was disappointing.
I would also caution that the tsetse flies are pretty thick in Tarangire!" See all these reviews: 13n in Tanzania
Kuro also tell us that they usually discourage picnic breakfasts from the camp, as in Tarangire you have to use picnic sites - you cannot stop anywhere else in the park. It would seem the guide did not effectively communicate that to these guests, and again Kuro apologise for this.
"Kuro Tarangire Review"
We had a wonderful time. We saw much more wildlife than we had ever expected. This was largely due to our guide Silvanus. His knowledge of the land, plants, birds and animals was quite incredible and we learned so much from him. There was not a question he could not answer. It was a pleasure to have been with him for those days.
Of particular note was a night drive where we had the wonderful and unique experience of witnessing a pack of wild dogs as they followed a herd of zebra and buffalo. In addition we would recommend to anyone the opportunity to go on a bush walk. Silvanus really brought the land and environment to life as he took us around.
If it is possible we would like to contact Silvanus, to whom we would like to send a small booklet about where we live and also Emmanuel who ran the Kuro camp so efficiently as I would like to follow up on a conversation he and I were having about ideas for walks etc." See all these reviews: 9n in Tanzania; 8n in Zanzibar
