Lion Safari: Day-by-day
More detailed information of what each day entails, and the various places you’ll stay on the Lion Safari. Everything we do is completely tailor-made so while this is an idea which works well, we’ll always design an itinerary just for you.
Starts: Victoria Falls Airport
Victoria Falls to Camp Hwange by road
An air-conditioned vehicle will transfer you from the airport to meet your safari guide at Hwange National Park's Mbala Gate. Then it’s a 4WD safari to Camp Hwange, across rocky granite hills. It’ll take around four hours total, depending on how long you stop to watch wildlife on the way.
Camp Hwange
In the north-west of Hwange National Park, where the Kalahari's flat plains start to transition into rugged hills, you’ll find Camp Hwange. The camp combines a distinct "bush" feel with an emphasis on the safari experience and top guiding.

"Camp Hwange was exaclty how we remembered it to be. In a good way."

We've been sending our travellers on mobile safaris with David Carson for many years, and we are very impressed with this, his first permanent camp, which continues his legacy of top guiding and unforgettable safaris. Camp Hwange is all about experiencing the wilderness first-hand, so if you're looking for five-star luxury this is not the place for you. If, however, your emphasis is on flexible, knowledgeable and charismatic guiding in very comfortable surroundings, then we think you'll love it here. See our full report on Camp Hwange

Hwange to Mana Pools by 4WD & air
Flight schedules permitting, you may have time to enjoy one last game drive in Hwange before heading to Giraffe Springs airstrip. It takes about two hours to fly to Mana Pools by light aircraft, sometimes stopping for other passengers to alight. This is followed by a game drive into camp.

Vundu lies on the banks of the Zambezi River within a private area of Mana Pools National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose “congregation of animals … constitutes one of Africa's outstanding wildlife spectacles”.
It’s a park that Nick and his team know exceptionally well, their experience, skill and dedication attracting the team of David Attenborough’s Dynasties to film here for many months.
Flexibility is very much the key; one minute you could be on a game drive, the next breathless with anticipation as you approach a large elephant on foot. Or switch to a canoe to marvel at the wildlife of this iconic river.
Back in camp, with the river in front and a small “pan” at the back, it’s hard to know where to watch for wildlife – but there are plenty of vantage points: the seating area of your spacious tented chalet; the comfortable lounge raised above the river, or the more lowly area around the firepit.
