Chumbe Island Lodge: picture gallery

Chumbe Island is a tiny coral island about six miles by boat from Zanzibar Town.
The Island Lodge has one single-storey bungalow, and six double-storey bungalows.
All of these bungalows are within 30 seconds' walk of the beach.
The lodge provides a feeling of both privacy and a sense of freedom of living in the open.
All of the bungalows offer stunning views across the Indian ocean.
The ecologically-sensitive design of the lodge is award-winning.
The dining and lounge area sometimes also functions as an education center.
The food is simple but freshly prepared using traditional recipes and spices.
The bedrooms are accessed by a ladder...
...all have comfortable double or twin beds which are covered by a palm thatched roof.
The area downstairs is also open-sided...
...and consists of a lounge/living room area, a large hammock...
...and a bathroom.
You may choose to climb the 131 steps to the top of the Chumbe Lighthouse, built in 1904.
You can also dine in the ruins of the keeper's house now converted into a visitors' centre.
Escorted forest walks which look at the island's geology, flora and fauna are also available.
With only 7 bungalows the beach is always going to be quiet...
...even if the lodge is fully booked.
