Fig Tree Camp: Our full report

A small rustic property, Fig Tree Camp is located in the central area of Kafue National Park, and is one ...

... of the few camps easily reached by road from Lusaka. Hidden in the bush, the camp is located just south of the main road, with each of the tree house rooms overlooking a permanent lagoon.

Completely contrasting in style to its sister property Mukambi Safari Lodge, Fig Tree is a small and intimate camp with only tented rooms, each suspended on 3m high platforms, giving them the feeling of rather smart tree-houses. A wooden staircase leads up to a polished stone platform, and a small porch in front of the tent, each with views of the surrounding area. Gauze windows let in the light and breeze, while keeping out the insects. Each tent is simply, but comfortably, furnished with twin or double beds, wicker chairs and a wooden storage unit. Reed screens surround en-suite bathrooms at the back of each tent, each with flushing toilets and hot showers.

Sandy paths lead to the open plan main area, with simple, quality furnishings, and views over a beautiful beach and permanent lagoon created by the dried up Shishamba River.

Although we weren't able to stay long enough to experience any activities on out last visit, we understand that the camp offers walks and drives around the miombo woodland and grassland areas that surround the camp.

Being located just south of (but well hidden from) the main road from Lusaka, Fig Tree Camp is one of the few properties in Zambia that is easily reachable by road transfer from the capital. As such, it's usually used as a point to start your safari in Kafue National Park, before heading up to Fig Tree Camp's sister property on the Busanga Plains (about 5-6 driving), Mukambi Plains Camp.

Our view

Fig Tree Camp had only just opened when we first visited in August 2015, and hadn't yet received it's first guests. However, we liked the rustic, personal style of the camp, and thought the surrounding area was very picturesque. For a higher end lodge in this central area of the park, it seemed to be an excellent option.
