Selous - Zanzibar July 2023 (family of 4)
Tanzania and 1 other country between 25 Jul 2023 and 7 Aug 2023
"Thank you to Tam for arranging our booking!
We had the most amazing time and would not hesitate to use Expert Africa for our planning again. The (many) flight and taxi transfers all worked perfectly. It is great peace of mind having the transfers arranged by a professional team who know the respectable companies to use and means of booking...especially after meeting people who had booked their own flights from Zan - Dar es Salam but at the desk, they were told their tickets were not recognised and they had to charter their own flight to make their International flight!
It was our first safari and we had no idea what to expect in the quieter south Selous park but we saw more wildlife than we ever imagined (even on the day we arrived) and so few cars. It was perfect! The camp and every member of the Selous Impala team were just amazing."

"Absolutely perfect!"

"We stayed 4 nights here and it was a truly special experience!
All the camp team were superfriendly and welcoming and we had complete confidence and trust in the complete team. Each morning we were woken by a tea tray arriving at our tent with a gentle wake up call. For each drive/ boat trip we were waved off and welcomed back by the team, with cold towels waiting as a refresher on our return. The Masia were always ready to escort us around the camp and we felt safe in their hands.
Gody, our dedicated guide had a great eye and was great company, ensuring the plans for each day were slightly different to give us the greatest chance of different wildlife. 2 of our 3 full days we had full days drives with a 0630 start and a perfect location sought for breakfast (and lunch) in the bush. A truly memerable experience! At the end of our last drive we were in for a special treat in a fantastic location watching the sun go down.
The tents were spacious and had everything needed - no need to take shampoo, conditioner or shower gel.
The same day laundry service being included was a great additional treat we did not expect...and meant we packed way too many clothes! There are also 2 different types of family tents available (2 individual tents on the same platform and a massive tent with part partition and 2 bathroom areas) but we did not stay in these.
The food was fantastic and plentiful, whether in the restaurant or eating in the bush.
I would not hesitate to recommend!"

"This small hotel (9 rooms) has lots of character, is in a great location, easy to find and the staff are all very friendly and professional.
There is a large variety in room style though - 3 different sized rooms on each floor, replicated over the 3 floors. We ended up in the smaller double room and had no space for luggage off the floor as the safe was positioned in the middle of the one and only shelf. It would have been helpful to have somewhere we could sort through our bags other than spreading out and covering the floor. If we were staying more than 2 nights this would have been a problem. The other room the teenagers had had 2 double beds, a massive bathroom and shelving and a seperate seating area. We just didn't trust them with all the luggage!
The cooked breakfast was lovely, the buffet was simple and the lunch/ dinner seemed expensive considering we ate at restaurants right by the sea for less."

"Great location away from the masses but we felt the management, who were very present at the bar in the evening were more interested in being a presense for the guests at dinner time, rather than paying attention to how the lodge restuarant was running. I understand language with the staff may be an issue but basic communication with guests from restaurant staff was not as expected.
There were repeated unnecessary niggles, like:
- at tea time (3-4 or 4-5pm, cant remember!) - not being allowed to sit outside as they wanted to set the tables for dinner. Dinner starts at 730. One day. we did to sit at an outside table for tea and 20 mins in were asked to move inside so they could set the table. It took them max of 1h to set the tables so why can't it be after teatime?
- repeatedly being asked by restaurant staff at end of dinner to sign for our drinks which we had either already signed for at the bar or had bought with. No joined up communication.
- breakfast - every day at least 3 of us had items missing or swapped on from what we ordered and then made to feel a nuisance asking for the item to be corrected. Also asking is spoecific item was in stock at breakfast (as we were told it had run out before), being told yes...so ordered...and then it didn't turn up on the plate as out of stock.
- first dinner - no soup course was served and we were repeatedly ignored when we asked for us. We gave up.
Our last day we had a private charter which had miscommunicated the meeting point. We were told one thing, the crew another. The crew liaised with the hotel reception and they said they would let us know if they saw us...but why did they not call us? We wasted an hour trying to track the crew down at the busy end of the beach.
We are not ones for entertainment in the evenings but it would have been nice to sit at the outside bar after dinnrer but it was closed so there was no atmosphere after dinner to want to sit and have a drink."

Feedback response
Expert Africa passed along these comments to Fumba Beach Lodge. The manager thanked these travellers for their feedback and did address some of the issues that were raised. The miscommunication between the private charter and the lodge was unfortunate, however the manager did say that, as the activities were not arranged through the their in-house activity centre, they were unable to assist with locating the private charter, as the information was not passed along to their reception. The lodge noted with regret the feedback regarding their overall service and took the necessary steps to see that similar issues would not be repeated in the future.
