My Sep 2024 trip
Namibia between 2 Sep 2024 and 26 Sep 2024
The same could not be said of the roads, though, most of the non-tarred ones were much worse than we expected. It was a very good place to get what they call a "Namibian massage" as we bumped along in our all-wheel drive Nissan X-Trail.
Beware, food portions are very big, like in the US! The quality of the food is superb, especially the beef, so tender.
We were apprehensive that we were staying in tents at some of the places - but they were nothing like what we expected the tent to be. They were really big and solid and felt safe (our main concern), plus all except Kanaan Desert Retreat had amazing facilities and amenities in them. Beds everywhere were really comfortable too.
We can truly say this amazing holiday was one of if not the best we have ever had, so glad we did not do a group trip."

It also had a fridge, which it did not say on your website, and also a safe (also not on your website.)
Other info that needs updating is "Wifi in main areas only." - no, we had it in our room."
Canyon Village
"Canyon Village review"
Service generally very erratic and poor.
Food not labelled which it needed to be as it was a buffet main course and you could not tell what was on the hot plates.
Mistake with bill when we checked out as they overcharged us by a hefty amount for wine that was on special offer.
Sundowner walk was excellent."
Nest Hotel
"Nest Hotel review"
Issues when ordering the wine as we chose the cheapest bottle and they claimed not to have that, nor the second cheapest, nor third, whether red or white, and it was only after involving the manager (who we had to wait ages to see) that this was resolved and they did find us a bottle from the cellar (which they claimed to have already looked in.
Hotel very popular with groups which meant it was very noisy in the dining room in the evening and at breakfast.
Food took forever to arrive but was excellent when it did, with very generous portions."
Kanaan Desert Retreat
"Kanaan Desert Retreat review"
No info on what there was to do.
No tea or coffee making facilities in the tent (a flask appeared that evening but we did not see it till the morning and had not been told about it) yet they expected us to pay for this in the restaurant. Anywhere else we stayed that did not have this available in the room had it free of charge in the central area. Also no afternoon tea, unlike the other proper safari Lodges.
Location of tents not suitable for those with disabilities as lots of steps to both them and the dining area.
Dinner was lovely, but at breakfast the next morning the lady stood over us like a guard while we ate, so not a very pleasant experience at all.
Nothing to do in the place except relax.
Lovely very friendly cat!"
They apologised for the inconvenience faced on arrival and mentioned that all guests usually receive a welcome drink along with a fresh cloth. The receptionist expressed regret for this oversight due to the high volume of check-ins on that particular day.
A coffee station is usually available in each room, however it seemed to be missing on this occasion and the management will ensure it is consistently prepared and available for guests.
We have updated the Kanaan page on our website to make it clear that there are a number of steps to navigate between the rooms and the main areas.

Who knew we'd have oryx lasagne for lunch? It was delicious as was the rest of the food.
Doro Nawas

If less mobile it would be very difficult to get to the tents or dining area.
We did the Desert Elephant afternoon excursion (which was brilliant, as was the sundowner drink it included) and we got back very late in the dark and just in time for dinner as we saw lots of elephants inc a mother and baby."
Okaukuejo Camp

Highly recommend paying extra to stay in a waterhole chalet. We were in number 10 w, directly facing the waterhole, and only had to walk a few metres to be able to look right into it and see the animals. By the way, there was private outdoor space (albeit fenced in so not very homely) as well as a shared outside space at the front, overlooking the waterhole.
You have to eat in the camp as there is nowhere else to go (although you could buy food and snacks and drinks and alcohol at the Camp shop) but the food was served cold and had to be sent back several times before it was hot enough to eat. The food is not "school dinner" type as it was not stodgy, and the portions were big (as everywhere in Namibias) but there was little choice and the staff were not able to describe what it was when it was not clear on the menu.
The service was appallingly bad, really slow, served the food for another table, took an hour to have our order taken on one of our two nights there, they really had no idea what service meant."
Mushara Bush Camp
"Mushara Bush Camp review"
On our second night they laid on a traditional BBQ in a candle-lit boma which was fantastic.
The guide on our morning safari was excellent, as was the safari itself in Etosha National Park where we saw even more wildlife in an area of the Park we had not already visited."
Okonjima Bush Camp

We shared a private chef and swimming pool and private game drive vehicle and driver between us but luckily did not have to sit together for dinner, only at breakfast time and for afternoon tea. The villa also had its own waterhole.
Highly recommend all the activities we did: leopard game drive in the afternoon, visit to AfriCat the next morning, rhino tracking the next afternoon, and another game drive the morning we left. Well worth getting up very early for and breakfast was really an excellent brunch after the morning drives, with juise, tea, coffe and cookies to wake us up before the morning drives."
Ai Aiba Lodge
"Ai Aiba Lodge review"
If you do the rock art walk behind the Lodge by yourself be aware it is not so much a walk as a scramble up the rocks! And that if you want to see the rock art you can actually do so without having to do the scrmable as it is easily accessible if you ask where the walk ends and head there instead along the road.
Problem with the bill when we checked out as they tried to charge us for a guided walk they said one of us had done and the drink they said that person had had as a sundowner. They also charged us for a second bottle of wine we had not ordered."
Galton House

Another couple arrived to eat at 9pm as they had been delayed (and the Lodge knew this) so we could easily have had our dinner a lot later. We got the impression they wanted everything served and eaten as quickly as possible so they could finish up for the evening. The previous time the male owner of the Lodge was there so we ate much later and were not hurried along. The same thing happened at breakfast and the lady serving us kept hovering which we found very off-putting.
We were in a rush to leave so did not have time to put any of this feedback on the form they gave us."
Could have done with a luggage rack as we had to use the bed and the floor for this.
Excellent dinner and breakfast, both with huge portions."
