My Jan 2025 trip
South Africa between 23 Jan 2025 and 12 Feb 2025
It largely went extremely smoothly, especially considering the significant amount of driving involved (through our own choice). There were times when we felt the driving instructions underestimated the journey times. It would be helpful on future occasions to stress that these times might be significantly longer with stops and, similarly, that roadworks in SA involve far greater holdups than in Europe.
In addition, although sign-posting is adequate in places, there were places where it disappeared entirely, including at the point where we needed to rejoin the N2 to return to Cape Town from Franschhoek. This would not be an issue for anyone with access to a GPS system, but that is not the case if one is trying to avoid the exorbitant charges either for mobile phone roaming or for activating the rental car's system. I would recommend that Expert Africa's documentation spell out these potential pitfalls.
On a different note, Linda was horrified to find several ticks on her body when we were in Franschhoek which, we suspect, might have attached themselves during a bush walk in Kariega, although this is by no means certain. We learnt from a local pharmacist that this is not an uncommon occurrence in summer and I would suggest that the trip documentation should warn of this possibility.
Although this form only asks for feedback on hotels booked through Expert Africa, I feel it is important to talk about the 2 hotels I booked myself.
I strongly recommend the Taj in Cape Town for anyone wishing to see the central sights of the city. Not only is it a beautiful hotel with excellent facilities and very high quality food outlets, but its location is perfect for sightseeing, shopping and choice of restaurants nearby. And its rates are more reasonable than other, well-located five-star establishments.
Similarly, the Plettenberg Hotel is, I feel, a good choice for anyone staying in that area and wanting easy access to both the town and the beach.
A word of warning for anyone staying nearby and tempted, as we were, to visit the Robberg Peninsula nature reserve. Although the setting is spectacular, the shortest hiking trail, which we chose, is a hair-raisingly difficult experience, visibly so even for people far younger than ourselves. At one point, there is no option to get back other than by hauling oneself by rope up a precipitously steep hillside. And there is no indication of the difficulty in the information provided at the ticket office or on the maps at the start of the trails."

Kariega Ukhozi Lodge
"Kariega Ukhozi Lodge review"
The villa had everything we needed, including wonderful views from the balcony, the food was generally of a good standard and the game drives and guiding were excellent.
Linda got a nasty dose of food poisoning in Plettenberg, which developed rapidly during the journey from there to Kariega, to the extent that she was too unwell to go on the first two game drives of our stay. The staff were as helpful as possible, phoning a doctor who she was able to speak to and, subsequently, providing her with whatever food she felt able to consume. When she was able to go on the drives, the following day - the first time for her - she was bowled over by what we saw and the whole experience.
Everything was done to a high standard, with excellent guiding from Megan, so that our stay was memorable, particularly when Linda felt better. I have previously stayed in several lodges, in Tanzania, Namibia and Kruger, and I am happy to recommend Kariega, despite the fact that the wildlife viewing is, inevitably, more limited than some other places. Notwithstanding this, the reserve does offer an excellent and varied viewing experience."

Rosenhof Country House
"Rosenhof Country House review"
We visited an ostrich farm (of course) which is a very touristy experience (also of course), but well done, nevertheless"

Franschhoek Country House (Not currently featured by Expert Africa)
"Franschhoek Country House review"
Our room/suite was very large and comfortable, though would have benefited from some refurbishment, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the gardens and other facilities were fine. In addition, we used the shuttle service into the centre of Franschhoek which worked extremely well and efficiently (despite our fears).
However the food and service in the restaurants, at dinner and breakfast, was rather less impressive, despite the obvious efforts of the staff and chefs to achieve a high standard. We had the impression that they were struggling to retain sufficiently well-trained staff, in the face of considerable competition in and around Franschhoek.
This resulted in cold/lukewarm dishes served at dinner (even after being sent back for reheating) and, rather more dramatically, a scene straight out of Fawlty Towers at breakfast when our (long-awaited) order was served to another guest and, when this was pointed out, one waitress was about to snatch it back from him before being stopped by her manageress. This provided us with considerable entertainment but was obviously not what the hotel sought to achieve."

Bay Hotel
"Bay Hotel review"
Dinner in the hotel was of a good standard but the selection at breakfast was rather less impressive and not replenished sufficiently promptly for a five star establishment.
Again, perhaps, as a result of excessive competition for well-trained staff in such a busy location."
Namibia trip Sept 2017
Namibia between 1 Sep 2017 and 16 Sep 2017
Everything was organised extremely well, with no problems of logistics, and the experience I obtained of Namibia was varied and consistently interesting. All the lodges were of a very good standard, with comfortable facilities and good quality food - as, indeed, I would have expected, given the overall cost.
The constant moving around was, inevitably, somewhat wearing by the latter stages, but this was an unavoidable element of this type of trip which attempts to cover a significant amount of ground. And, by the end, I felt I had acquired some satisfying insight into the country and its cultures, even if a trip of this nature can never hope to do much more than scratch the surface."

Little Kulala
"Wonderful scenery"

Strand Hotel
"Very smart hotel"
I took an excursion to Walvis Bay and boat trip which was well-run and worthwhile."

Doro Nawas
"Interesting but a little too long"
It also meant that two out of three evenings had a "bush dinner" which was entertaining the first time but repetitious after that. Similarly, the singing/dancing routines, which the staff engaged in at every opportunity, eventually became a little excessive.
Service and facilities, like the other Wilderness camps, are of a good standard, but the rooms are a little dark."

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp
"The smartest of the camps"
This arose because the couple I had been with chose not to go out on the final afternoon and this, in turn, triggered a sudden, (strategic?) illness in our guide, leaving me to join a newly-arrived couple, without any advance notice. This was the only time in the Wilderness camps that my status as a single traveller left me feeling slightly spare, possibly not unrelated to the fact that the (excellent and very enthusiastic) camp manager and her husband had earlier left, on their leave."

Serra Cafema
"V interesting visit to Himba village"
I found the Himba village visit fascinating and a far more authentic experience than the Damara "Living Museum", especially since I was the only visitor, along with my guide, and the lingering low cloud meant that the cattle had not yet been taken to pasture."

Okonjima Bush Camp
"Close contact with wildlife"
Getting close to cheetahs and leopards was an excellent experience, albeit not easily brought about by the guide. This was the only camp, however, where my single traveller status felt like a slight handicap - eating alone, for example, without being asked if I would prefer to have company, as in Serra Cafema, and spending much of the last game drive (following a female leopard) unable to hear the guide or see what was happening. This was partly a result of the greater numbers of visitors, but also the different style of this camp."
The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful (as they were everywhere we stayed)."
