"The Right Whale Trip"
Based at Grootbos Forest Lodge on 29 Oct 2015
"Whale watching was actually the primary purpose of our trip and we were not disappointed. By basing ourselves at Grootbos we were in the perfect location for boats going out of Gansbaii, just 15 minutes away - as well as for watching whales from the cliffs. The boat trip was very well organised and we had spectacularly good sightings of the whales - including a lot of breaching (which isn't normal, we were told - maybe one trip in every 30); and we also spent quality time alongside the Cape Fur Seals and spotting the birds on Dyer Island (including African penguins). For those interested, the boat also parked alongside one the the cage diving shark boats too, for great white shark sightings.
If we had one minor gripe it was the somewhat hyperbolic - verging on hysterical - commentary one of the boat crew 'treated' us to over the speaker system, especially during the breaching; our preference would have been for somewhat calmer enjoyment of these wonderful creatures. And, to be fair, most of the crew did go quietly and calmly about their business, un-fussily looking after the passengers." Read more about this whole safari
