Makuzi Beach: Our full report

Ten kilometres south of Chintheche is Makuzi Beach Lodge, a small owner-run lodge situated on the northern ...

... shores of Lake Malawi – Africa’s third largest fresh water lake. The beach here is soft white sand and is one of Malawi’s few private beaches what makes this secluded retreat even more appealing.

Makuzi Beach Lodge has eight comfortable en-suite stone chalets set in lush gardens overlooking the beach.
There is also a campsite including a barbecue area and an ablution block with hot showers.

The main bar and dining area are built on the rocks above the shoreline.
Although none of the team at Expert Africa have visited Makuzi Beach Lodge, we understand that the food here is good.
You can enjoy African specialities in the restaurant, in the garden or on the beach. The chef makes use of vegetables, fruits and herbs, which are grown on the property or locally.
Makuzi Beach is very eco-friendly. For example they have used local materials to build the lodge and work closely with the local community.

Activities from Makuzi Beach Lodge include a boat trip to Mpandi Kucha Island or walks to nearby villages.
You can also go snorkelling or fishing, and all necessary equipment is provided on-site.
As well as the usual lake activities, it is also possible to visit the nearby Bandawe Mission and orphanage.
Or take a walk on Makuzi Hill from where you will have panoramic views of the lake and the coastline.
The birdlife around the lodge is plentiful, so birdwatchers can definitely enjoy themselves at Makuzi Beach.
If the weather isn’t at its best then board games, cards and books are available at the bar.
