Ku Chawe Inn: Our full report

In the middle of the forest, Ku Chawe Inn is a super mountain retreat, with good food and notably friendly service.

Commanding panoramic views of the valley below, it makes a perfect base for gentle hiking in search of birds, wild orchids and the occasional antelope.

Ku Chawe Inn is located on the edge of the Zomba Plateau, which rises 2,200 m, offering amazing views of the valley below.

This large hotel is located in a great location with stunning views from the edge of Zomba Plateau and located 90 minutes from Blantyre. Being at a higher altitude it is lusher and greener here than the dry dusty African landscape below, with forests, lakes and waterfalls.

Although quite dated the 37 en-suite rooms are all very comfortable and have air-conditioning, satellite TV, Wifi and tea and coffee making facilities.

Mulunguzi Restaurant offers a la carte and buffet dining, and Bastion’s Bar serves cocktails wine and snacks throughout the day.

A number of activities are available from Ku Chawe Inn which include a Zomba Plateau Tour, which visits a trout farm, the Williams Falls and caves. It is also possible to visit Zomba town, the old colonial capital of Malawi, including Zomba market and the Botanical Gardens.

Zomba is very popular with birders and Lepidopterists, well known for its butterflies and birds.

Our view

Zomba is ideally located for a stopover between safaris. The cooler climate here makes a refreshing break from the heat.
