Sosian: video gallery

Sosian: picture gallery

Sosian is one of a few Kenyan lodges where you have a good chance of seeing wild dogs.
Sosian is a wonderfully relaxing, estancia-style ranch house.
The lodge is part of a working estate, and you park in what is essentially a farmyard…
…and walk down a couple of steps into the cool and welcoming lobby area.
There's a large and comfortable lounge…
... with plenty of cosy sofas ...
... and a beautiful piano at one end.
This leads on to a veranda with plenty of perches, and a large telescope.
At its south end, the verandah curls around the end of the main house.
This is where early morning snacks and afternoon tea are served.
Just inside, there's an ante-room where drinks are served…
…just outside the dining room.
The seven rooms at Sosian are in three, comfortably designed, ground-floor cottages…
…each one with a cool, plant-filled verandah.
They're furnished in a bright, comfortable, country-house style…
…with French windows leading out to their own verandahs.
Your wake-up call (if you've asked for one), comes as a knock on the glass…
…with a tray of whatever you ordered set on the verandah table.
All the rooms are en-suite…
... and the bathrooms are a really good size…
…though possibly in need of a bit of an update.
The honeymoon cottage...
...is a bit more secluded...
…with a larger bathroom, with twin sinks, shower...
…and bathtub.
Activities around the lodge include tennis, swimming…
…and snooker.
But Sosian's real strength lies in its huge range of activities, from bush-walks…
…to camping out, and waking up to breakfast in the bush...
…to game drives in search of elephants…
…and other savannah "megafauna"…
…to the thrill of driving out with radio-tracking equipment…
…on the trail of wild dogs.
Sosian's stand-out activity is riding...
... and they breed their own horses.
Usually around 25 horses are available for safari-rides.
The brave might even try their hand at camel riding.
Whilst almost every day ends with a sundowner, in the bush or on top of a kopjie.
