Kholle House

About Kholle House

Once a cultured princess’s treasure trove, Kholle House is now a beautiful boutique bolt-hole inspired by its history.

Kholle House is named after its radiant, 19th century owner, Princess Kholle, daughter of the first Omani Sultan of Zanzibar.

Originally built to host her refined parties and display her most treasured possessions of artwork & ceramics, the new owners spent many years painstakingly renovating the building to showcase its fascinating past. Tastefully restored by local artisans, using traditional methods and materials, they have revealed beautiful, historic features and paired them with thoughtful, high-quality furnishings.

Each of the ten bedrooms at Kholle House has been individually decorated, using dark antique furniture, warm colours and traditional fabrics. From bijoux doubles to grand suites, some with decidedly French décor and others Indian influenced, each room offers excellent value, Swahili style.

Truly setting it apart among small Stone Town hotels is its outside space: a pretty walled garden, surrounded by palms, flowering frangipani trees and a small, lush lawn dotted with loungers. This little city oasis is crowned with an inviting swimming pool: a precious rarity in the heart of Stone Town and welcome relief after a hot day sightseeing.

Zanzibar in January

As on the Tanzanian mainland, January typically marks the start of the short dry season in Zanzibar. Conditions are likely to be hot and mostly dry, with temperatures exceeding 30ºC, although it is not uncommon to get a tropical shower in the afternoons. January can feel very humid at times, and this is particularly noticeable in Stone Town, although this can be tempered by the cooling sea breeze.

New Year is one of the most popular times to visit Zanzibar, with many hotels being fully booked over the festive period. The island generally becomes much quieter after 10th January, and prices drop too.

  • Mostly hot with the occasional shower.
  • High humidity, which can be relieved by the refreshing breeze.
  • Very busy over New Year, with high prices and long minimum stays often
  • Quieter and better value later in the month.
  • Wind from the northeast, and so the southwest coast is more sheltered.
