Overall
Namibia between 18 Mar 2011 and 2 Apr 2011
Overall, we were also very happy with the itinerary, which was largely advised by Tracy: it gave us a good view of the diversity but kept distances reasonable so that it would suit a 2-year old.
We were unlucky that our flight out was cancelled so we arrived late and exhausted at Intu Afrika, meaning we missed out on the game drive where we would have seen lions.
Highlights of the trip:
- the overall experience at Wolwedans
- climbing Dune 45 and Dead Vlei, and climbing Dune 45 again the following day, with no one else around
- Sandfields and generally our time in Swakopmund, relaxing and eating at the Jetty"

Wolwedans Desert Lodge
"Wolwedans Dune Lodge review"
Our guide Usko was great, and so were our chefs-waitresses Ushi and Tabea, they all went out of their ways to make our stay a great one and to accommodate for the presence of a young child.
The scenery on the reserve is incredible, and a sunrise at the MVS is out of this world.
Overall, this was undoubtedly the highlight of our Namibia trip.
NB: the "good" ranking for the facilities only refers to the swimming pool, which often had insects in it and could have been cleaned more often (or maybe it was and there are just too many insects...)"
Kulala Wilderness Camp, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Kulala Wilderness Camp review"
First, the camp is nearly 2 hours away from Sossuvlei and the reserve on which it is set is really nothing special (though we were coming from Wolwedans so maybe this was just several notches below and we were influenced by why we had left). This means that the focus is really Sossuvlei, but the day trip is quite tiring so we were a bit stuck on the second day.
Also, we happened to be there at the same time as about 15 travel agents/TOs so on the second day there was actually no car to take us anywhere, until we complained and Enrico managed to find a car from KDL, but it wasn't smooth anyway. In the end we made our own arrangements and went back to Sossuvlei with our car.
We were not impressed by the work of the 2 managers, Enrico and Petronella. They were not particularly nice nor efficient: we didn't get a mosquito net for our daughter until the last of 3 nights, which caused a lot of discomfort and dozens of bites, Enrico didn't organise properly our visit to Neuras winery when we left (miscommunication with the daughter of the owners, who in the end thought we were not coming), the problem with the car mentioned above, etc... Generally the staff are less efficient and friendly than elsewhere and we blame the managers for this.
Finally, this is not a camp for kids. I share a part of responsibility as I insisted to go there, but with the high platforms with no proper fencing (around the pool or dining area or in the room -> inexplicably, we were given the room with the highest elevation between the balcony and the ground, surely not a clever choice for a family with a child) and the type of activities on offer, our 2-year old had a difficult time and so did we.
On the positive side:
Our guide was very good: Dawid.
The swimming pool and the views were great.
The camp has the "Wilderness Safaris" touch insofar as the atmosphere and ambiance at the camp are great, we made good friends with some other guests."

BullsPort Lodge and Farm
"Bullsport Guest Farm review"
Highlights were the simple and efficient service provided, the walks and views of the mountains, the food, the relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
It is also a great place with a young child."
Sandfields Guesthouse, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Sandfields Guesthouse review"
We had the best possible end of our trip at Sandfields. The guesthouse is modern, functional, well-located but it would be nothing without the care and work of Jean, who made our stay very special, we felt at home.
The highlight is how perfect this place is for young kids, from the meals every evening to the baby sittings so that we could go out, through the presence of a same-aged child who our daughter could happily play with in the perfect garden.
This place is a gem!"

The lodge generally lacks character, vibe and atmosphere. It is functional but needs to develop a soul."
