A fantastic and memorable trip to namibia
Namibia between 11 Sep 2010 and 29 Sep 2010
Our concern before we left was that we might have chosen too many places with too much driving inbetween. As it turned out, the journeys between places were some of our best experiences. We drove 2,300 miles in total and it was a pleasure. We would love to have stayed in places longer, but the itinerary really worked well.
Suggestions to help us improve our trips or our service:
Just to try and ensure that the vegetarian information gets through to the chef! Easier said than done, I know.
I'm sure they must find it frustrating to find out they have to make something else when the guest is actually sitting at the table.
We did actually make sure we told each of the lodges when we checked in."

Central Lodge
"Clean and smart Central Lodge"
Very clean and tidy. Manicured lawns and a spotless pool area."
Canyon Lodge
"Beautiful location at Canyon Lodge"
We had a great room with fantastic views. I love the boulders jutting into it.
A really good buffet-style evening meal with a very good choice for the vegetarian one of us.
Really lovely gardens at the front of the building.
Not too far to go to see the canyon and in a beautiful location."
Eagle's Nest
"Utter peace and seclusion at Eagle's Nest"
We only had one night and opted to take the barbeque pack with us. It took a little extra time for this to be prepared before we could drive out to our chalet, but they had really made an effort to prepare a good vegetarian meal - not that easy for a barbeque. Watching the sun set and sitting out cooking under the stars was a highlight for us.
Fridge was really well stocked too.
All very cosy and comfortable."
Kulala Desert Lodge
"Kulala Desert Lodge"
They provided a hot buffet for evening meals, but there was nothing special for the vegetarian, he just had vegetables. On the remaining two nights they had noticed this and made him something - very good.
Really good afternoon tea and cakes/pastries. I like that they produce some of their own vegetables.
Our third night was very windy and quite cold - when we went to bed we found furry hot-water bottles in there. Fantastic.
Did a morning dunes trip with the lodge - very good.
Frustratingly close to the dunes if you want to drive in youself as we did - can't use their private access. This adds three hours to your visit to the dunes. I've ticked 'Excellent' for location, but that was more to do with the ambience."
Villa Margherita
"Smart and stylish Villa Margherita"
Nice courtyard area.
Food was pretty good as a meat-eater, but poor for the veggie. He had to have pasta both nights and the second night was really bland - soggy gnocchi in white sauce (it should have been gorgonzola, but they either forgot to add it or ran out.
Staff were very nice.
First internet for guests on our trip that we were aware of."
Ballooning in the Namib Desert
"Balloon over the desert"
20 Sep 2010 • Morning excursion
Eric who owns the balloon business took us up and he was fantastic. He was so enthusiastic and a great character.
Wish I'd brought a hat and gloves - I didn't realise it would be so cold.
Coast and Sandwich Harbour
"Exhilarating trip tp Sandwich Harbour"
21 Sep 2010 • All-day excursion
Wayne from Turnstone tours really made it exciting - especially driving up and down the dunes and the race back along the beach before the tide came in.
Saw loads of wildlife and Wayne was very knowledgable.
We only expected a snack, but he provided a very good lunch with a table and cloth, proper plates and cutlery. I never expected to be eating home made lasagne and apple crumble (both excellent) in the middle of the dunes!
Ondudu Safari Lodge
"Erongo Wilderness Lodge review"
Our room had a brilliant view - one of the best. I felt sorry for anyone in the room at the bottom of our walkway (No.7?) as it had a view of a spiky bush!
Main dining area had great views too and was very warm and friendly.
We had chance to use the pool, but this was not great - loads of insects floating in it and green stuff growing on the sides. No paving around it either - just dirt/sand. Bit scrappy.
They had trouble with the water supply while we were there and there was no water after our first afternoon. We wern't bothered about this and they did offer to take us to Omaruru to a room they had rented to have a shower, but it's a bit far, so we declined and just used water from a bucket that they brought. We also declined a free lunch to make up for the inconvenience, as we don't eat lunch.
We had a lovely early morning walk with Johnny, the guide. His knowledge of the area, animals and plants was excellent."
One of the main water pumps in Omaruru, which is where Erongo’s water is piped from, had broken, and its replacement contained some airblocks which had to be bled out of the pipe. As this took a few days, the back-up tank at the lodge therefore also ran out of water.
Guests were supplied with bottled water in their rooms to drink and water taken from the pool was used to flush the toilet. As water was taken from the pool, the water level dropped so the pump could not be used, and so the pool became rather dirty. In order to conserve water, the grass was not watered during this period and so went brown in the heat.
Lindy has assured us that the water situation is now back to normal, and full facilities have resumed in the rooms. The swimming pool is once again clear and blue, and the grass is now returning to its original colour.
Anderssons Camp, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Comfortable and stylish Anderssons camp"
We loved the reclaimed and recyled nature of the place - very stylish in an understated way. Very clean everywhere.
Animals right outside your room verandah - giraffe, rhino, wilderbeest, springbok etc. and lions roaring in the night. Very exciting.
Very friendly atmosphere.
Food for the vegetarian was a little hit and miss - nothing on the first night apart from the main meal minus the meat. On the second night we were told that the starter was Carrot and Lentil soup - Dave swallowed a mouthfull and screwed up his face - it was full of finely shredded meat. This is not a good thing at all.
We then both waited for well over an hour for the main course. Everyone else had gone on to dessert. They must have been trying to do something vegetarian for Dave. When it finally arrived he had the same as me, minus the veg, but with a great big potoato. On the third night they had prepared something in advance and it was fine. So, it would seem that his dietary requirements did not reach the kitchen even though we told them when we arrived.
We had chance to use the pool, but I was put off because there was nowhere to sit by it in shade. Maybe they had a sun shade they could bring out, but I didn't try and find out."

Nice communal areas with lovely gardens and pool area.
Some slighltly off-the-wall food combinations at dinner, but not bad.
The city centre is not on your doorstep, but this made for a quiet laid-back feeling.
Old fashioned touch of a small carafe of sherry in your room - wouldn't have thought to have it, but rather nice!."
