Namibia May 2009
Namibia between 2 May 2009 and 16 May 2009
The customer service was excellent everywhere, everyone was unfailingly polite, helpful and friendly.
The highlights of the trip for us were Ongava Tree Top camp - loved the camp and the game drives were really good, and Kulala Desert Lodge - the dunes were stunning, just as I'd imagined them."

Beach Lodge

Ongava Tented Camp
"Ongava Tented Camp review"
The shared areas eg bar , pool and dining area were lovely.
The water hole attracted plenty of game, eg giraffe, lion, rhino, lots of antelope.
We saw plenty of game within the Ongava reserve itself-rhino, lion, zebra, giraffe, and within Etosha we also saw elephant.
Our guide Festus was great, really knowledgeable and a good communicator too."
Onguma Camp Kala
"Onguma Tree Top review"
Being so small it's easy for the staff to outnumber the guests so that you are truly looked after by the ever attentive staff. The food was without doubt some of the best we had on the whole trip. The camp is run by a husband and wife team which adds to the homleyness.
The only aspect that could be improved on would be the quantity and variety of game in the Onguma Reserve itself, however this is compensated by the very easy acess to Etosha."
Olive Grove
"Perfect overnight stop."
I can't think of many other Guest Houses that could offer a full range of treatments from the attached wellness centre as well."
Central Lodge
"Good for a stopover"
Central Lodge is as the name suggests bang in the middle of town, with everything one needs. The rooms are spacious and air conditioned with TV, there is a pool and a good restaurant and small bar."
Canyon Lodge
"Canyon Lodge"
Food was plentiful , including game, salads, and produce from the Lodge's own farmstead, and quality was very good, meals were self service from a buffet counter. Good wine list.
The choir entertained us with singing on Mothers Day which was very enjoyable.
The Lodge is obviously popular, and a large coach party occupied much of the dining room during our stay, if you wanted a smaller, more intimate and personable place to stay then consider the Canyon Roadhouse, (same owners) - we had lunch and coffee here twice and the staff remembered us. It had a nice relaxed feel to it."
Sinclair Guest Farm, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Sinclair Guest Farm Review"
Very pretty farmstead in beautiful location. Friendly dog who directed us to the front door!
The other guests were all German speaking but our hosts made a real point of talking to us in English and including us in the conversations over drinks and dinner.
Food was home cooked, hearty and solidly Germanic! (Former vegetarians beware).
Fascinating to look around the old copper mine on the farm.
The swimming pool did not appear to be in use (other than as an overflow for the water tank)
I think some of the finishing touches in the room were a little tired and could be rejuvenated eg pillows and duvets were very thin and we were slightly cold at night. Towels were small. Needs to keep up with what other guest farms are offering now."

Kulala Desert Lodge
"Dune with a View !"
The proximity to the dunes and the easy access via the private gate into the Sossusvlei National Park are a real bonus here, allowing one to lie-in until 5am before heading out on a sunrise dune drive (!). However it is a long (about 14km) and very rough drive to the camp from the main road.
Very welcoming staff as always, nice to find husband and wife teams again.
Very high quality of accommodation-shown by the high quality of things like the bed linen, pillows , towels and toiletries. Food was excellant.
Staff entertained us with singing in the dining room after dinner-excellant. Our guide Dawid was very knowledgeable and coped well with the mixed fitness levels in our group.
The one and anly thing I could say was less than perfect was the swimming pool which looked somewhat dirty.
Balloon flight - Absolutely wonderful.
We were almost late due to a problem with our pick up (they went to the wrong lodge), but we made it just in time. I liked the fact it wasnt too crowded-the basket held 16, and there was plenty of room.
The pilot, Astrid, was amazing, and took us up to 900m, and then down to just a few metres above the ground, and rotated the basket so that everyone got a good view of everything from all directions. We actually didnt see much wildlife - a few springbok, oryx and ostrich, but the scenery was wonderful. The flight lasted about an hour and was followed by a very good champagne breakfast. Pricey, but an unforgettable experience."

Pelican Bay Hotel, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Baywatched."
Friendly, helpful staff. All rooms have lovely bay views, our room was not large but perfectly adequate.
Breakfast was good, we had dinner in the Raft restaurant next door.
The Europcar hire office is located in the hotel which was really useful."

There isn't much else in the immediate vicinity but I suspect this will change as there seemed to be a lot of new developement nearby.
The restaurant has a great ocean view, but the service was a bit slow."
