My May 2024 trip
Namibia between 2 May 2024 and 15 May 2024
Our Toyota Fortuna was fantastic and perfect for the journey.
The advice we received that it would be cold at night, turned out not to be accurate for our visit during the first 2 weeks of May. We packed too many thick clothes for the expected cold evenings which actually we only require d in Swakopmund.
Nearly all accommodation supplied Peaceful Sleep in the rooms which was appreciated.
The information given on all of the accommodations was completely accurate and well described.
The map supplied was good and detailed. We did use Google maps on occasions to lead us to the actual accommodation."

Elegant Desert Lodge
"Elegant Desert Lodge review"
Absolute silence apart from the sound of birds. Extremely comfortable bed (with mosquito nets). Dinner served on large attractive terrace lit only by candlelight. Amazing starlit sky. No choice meal choice other than vegetarian option. some nice areas to sit and enjoy watching the sun go down with a sundowner.
Self service tea and coffee in foyer with cakes in the afternoon. Always plenty of iced water to top up your water bottle.
The only wildlife we saw was a jackal"

The Delight
"The Delight review"
Room was large and beds extremely comfortable. Modern bathroom with enormous sink and good hot shower.
Staff were able to recommend restaurants for dinner and offered good advice, recommending driving rather than walking after dark.
The central position of the hotel was important as we could happily walk around the town and onto the long promenade directly from it."

Doro Nawas
"Doro Nawas review"
The accommodation was in individual rondavels dotted all around the foot of the hillside with the most wonderful uninterrupted views of the bush through to the mountains on the horizon. The rooms were large, simply furnished with the most comfortable of beds and large french windows which opened up onto a private patio. No aircon because of their eco credentials I think as well as their remoteness, but a ceiling fan as well as a free standing electric fan. The ceiling was thatched and the walls were canvas.
Dinner was buffet style with quite a large choice. Soup and dessert however were served at the table. The wonderful staff entertained us with traditional songs at the end of the meal and seemed to take as much pleasure in singing as we did in listening.
A choice of savoury tart or cake were available for self service in the afternoon.
A torch was provided for finding our way up and down the path in the evening.
A small pool area was very welcome in the heat of the afternoon. The water was cold but refreshing. The 360 panoramic view from the wide verandah which surrounded the public areas was spectacular. This is where breakfast was served in the morning.
A very peaceful and relaxing setting in the middle of nowhere!
We drove ourselves to the Twyfelfontein rock paintings over the extremely bumpy gravel road.
The only wildlife we spotted were ostriches."

Mushara Lodge
"Mushara Lodge review"
Large thatched cottage with Beaevery amenity. Extremely comfortable beds, complete with mosquito nets. Large open plan bathroom area with enclosed shower and plenty of hot water.
Large lawned area with trees, dotted with sunbeds and chairs surrounding a large pool in which to cool down.
Dinner served under the stars in the evening. The menu was displayed in the bar beforehand.
Breakfast was buffet style with the usual either continental or cooked as required.
Pet warthogs roamed the grounds."

Okaukuejo Camp
"Okaukuejo Camp review"
The accommodation is basic and surprisingly expensive. However the bed was comfortable with mosquito nets provided. The aircon worked. The bathroom is very basic and we didnt ever manage to get hot water for the 2 nights we were there. Tea and coffee facilities are offered and a fridge is provided.
The restaurant is okay and the outside seating area quite attractive. Service is a bit slow and the staff a bit hit and miss. Dinner which is included was fine. Breakfast which is self service is pretty basic. Hot food offered or basic cereals, feeble fruit salad and basic yoghurt.
There are two smallish pools onsite with a few outside sunbeds. The onsite shop is very well stocked but the staff there a quite indifferent.
Bottom line is we would go there again because access to the waterhole is so unique."

Ai Aiba Lodge
"Ai Aiba Lodge review"
It is nestled amongst the most beautiful outcrop of enormous granite rocks with far reaching views. It is strikingly peaceful with rooms dotted under the largest stone outcrop in semi detached fashion. The beds are extremely comfortable and one can lie in bed and follow the uninterrupted view to the horizon. Facilities included a nespresso machine, and tea and coffee making facilities.
A good sized pool is set into the side of the lawn where pet warthogs roam, and there are bicycles available to borrow to explore the surroundings.
Meals are served in a very attractive large thatched room surrounded by floor to ceiling glass sliding doors and overlooking the view. There was a limited choice available on the menu for dinner.
Breakfast was good and varied, some self service and some ordered such as a smoothie, pancakes or the usual cooked offerings."

Olive Grove
"Olive Grove review"
Would definitely return if we ever returned to Windhoek."
Friendly and helpful staff. Tea and coffee facilities and home made cookies provided. Also sherry and chocolates.
We decided to eat in for dinner and were very satisfied with the choice of starter, mains and dessert.
Breakfast was served at the table with a choice of both continental and cooked.
The pool was very small and could be described as decorative rather than functional.
The staff were friendly and we would choose Olive Grove again if we ever returned to Windhoek."
