My Jun 2023 trip
Botswana and 1 other country between 6 Jun 2023 and 17 Jun 2023
"The clue's in the title. The expertise of Expert Africa shone through, from the advice of Megan Green, to the knowledge of guides Andrew Harkness, Josiah of Splash and Lagoon's Spenser to the training and commitment of camp staff to the cheerful professionalism of the Mack Air pilots.
Everyone went the extra mile to ensure this was a uniquely memorable experience for a seventy year old who's had his fair share of those in the past.
If you want to feel it's good to be alive give it a go under those enthralling Botswana skies.
One small piece of advice - when the sun's not around it gets very cold. Thermals, hat and gloves are useful supplements to the ubiquitous bush baby hot water bottles and ponchos."

Khwai Private Mobile Camp (Not currently featured by Expert Africa)
"Khwai Private Mobile Camp review"

"If you want to experience life in the bush for a few days this is the way to do it. I never thought sleeping in a Meru tent, using a long drop toilet and a bucket shower could be so much fun.
Andrew's knowledge and experience were clear from our very first game drive, when he spotted and followed two black backed jackals to a lion kill, where a pride of eight were still feasting on an impala with vultures and the jackals waiting for the scraps. Without a spotter to help Andrew drove, read tracks and the landscape and the amount of effort he put into finding animals was impressive.
Back at camp Andrew was a never ending source of information about the animals, landscape and stories of Botswana as we chatted around the campfire.
Being woken by the bellowing of a distressed hippo at 2am, with lions huffing seemingly next to our tent provided an unsought burst of adrenalin, knowing Andrew and his experienced team were on hand was comforting. Next morning we found a very sorry looking hippo a few hundred yards from the camp but the lions had lost interest and wandered off.
The biggest surprise was the varied and always tasty food cooked over a wood fire. The team turn out freshly baked bread, salads, cooked breakfasts, lasagne, pies, great food. They will wash and iron clothes in a day, and there's always hot water for an early wash in the dark at 6am and plenty more for a refreshing shower in the afternoon.
Khwai Private Mobile Camp delivers a rare and riveting experience. Embrace it and you will not be disappointed."

Splash Camp
"Splash Camp review"
3 nights
Arrived

"Splash provided the most memorable of many highlights on our nine day safari. Less than an hour after landing at the airstrip, en route to the camp, guide Josiah and tracker OB picked up a hunting leopard. As we bounced over low bushes and through elephant hollows we could see the cat slinking towards a group of impala under a tree, where baboons were foraging. Suddenly the bush erupted in a cacophony of baboon warning cries. Forty or fifty of them squared up to the leopard - advancing and retreating as he moved forwards and back, until eventually he stalked away into the long grass.
It was not a good few days for the hungry leopards of Splash. On one of our nighttime drives OB spotted a female trying to separate a young buffalo from a large herd. The herd closed ranks and the leopard turned away.
Josiah was an excellent guide and formed a formidable team with OB introducing us to a host of wildlife including lions with cubs, a range of antelope, vervet monkeys, warthogs, zebras, giraffes and many, many elephants.
The camp itself is finished to a high standard and is a very comfortable place to stay."

Lagoon Camp
"Lagoon Camp review"

"We thought our experiences at Splash would be hard to beat but Lagoon went one better and delivered cheetahs on top of all the other wildlife. Once again we had an excellent guide Spenser and tracker Vincent.
We asked to see cheetahs and on the first day they track a pair of brothers through very thick bush for seven hours. Their dedicated pursuit meant we saw cheetahs for the first time. Their application was matched by their good humour and Spenser's wide-ranging experience. He knew about everything and introduced us to the fascinating world of termites and how impala middens create waterholes during an hour long walk in the bush. The walking safari was just one of many unforgettable experiences.
Lagoon is a camp where the animals come to you. The chugging of the hippos accompanies your sleep, elephants and antelope parade down to the water to drink and crocodiles lurk on the banks. During our stay a female leopard took a stroll past the tented rooms one night whilst everyone slept.
The staff are delightful. On our last night they all sang and danced their way into the dining area for an impromptu concert of Botswanan songs before dinner - a real treat."

Staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was good.
We did the sunset cruise provided by the Lodge and it was one of the highlights of our visit."
