Return to Zambia 2024

Zambia between 21 Jul 2024 and 5 Aug 2024

Trip rating: Excellent
"We very much enjoyed our second trip to the Luangwa Valley and saw the leopard that had eluded us last time.

If you want a more active safari (ie walking) that looks at the large animals and the little insects, with knowledgeable guides and relatively little chance of seeing other people, we would strongly recommended Remote Africa Safaris."

"A good hotel for a short stay in Lusaka.

Rooms are spacious; good selection of food. Quiet location.

Didn't use the pool - had quite a lot of leaves in it."

Lusaka City Tour

"Lusaka City Tour review"

23 Jul 2024 • Morning excursion

Well worth doing if in Lusaka for a day or two.

National Museum, though basic by international museum standards, explains the history of Zambia well. Drove around some key sites and visited an elephant orphanage. Then visited an art gallery (interesting but rather pricey) and directed to the very smart jewellery store alongside which we weren't looking for on our tour.

Had lunch in a local Zambian restaurant.

Tafika

Tafika

"Tafika review"

3 nights Arrived 24 Jul 2024
"This is our second visit to Tafika and it is as good as ever.

Strongly recommend the drive from Mfuwe to get a sense of the local area and people. Met a couple of guides from our previous visit as well as John & Carole.

Very lucky with our game drives and saw lots of wildlife. As ever guides were very knowledgeable. Food, drink and service all extremely good. We gathered that the kitchen garden had been expanded in the last few years. Old donkey boilers have now been replaced by (instant) gas boilers.

Even squeezed in a short game drive before heading for the airstrip and our flight north."

Takwela Camp

Takwela Camp

"Takwela Camp review"

2 nights Arrived 27 Jul 2024
"Excellent location on the riverbank.

The dense woodland came as a surprise after South Luangwa, so harder to see animals. Chalets, food and service all very good. Unlike South Luangwa you are very conscious that the animals are not habituated to vehicles and detours may be needed around them.

The smallest animals caused the largest disruption (a 0400 chalet invasion of red ants !). Did both game drive and walking safari. Hippos even noisier than Tafika. We saw the least number of animals at this camp.

It was good to catch up with Moffat who had been our guide in 2019 when we walked in South Luangwa."

Mwaleshi Camp

Mwaleshi Camp

"Mwaleshi Camp review"

2 nights Arrived 29 Jul 2024
"Walked here from Takwela (about 10 kms) arriving in time for lunch. Lovely location on a shallow stretch of the Mwaleshi river.

Chalets, food and service of the usual high standard. Brent was an extremely good guide and some of our walking was sitting and waiting for animals to arrive.

Following animal warnings laid in wait for a leopard and were duly rewarded as it came along the riverbank. We only used a vehicle briefly, but be ready to take off shoes/socks to cross the river a number of times on each walk (water less then knee height). One night we had sundowners on the river bank opposite the camp and then waded back.

Saw evidence of a rhino, but no actual rhino.

On one occasion whilst watching a lioness we were called back to camp as there was pack of wild dogs 'loafing' opposite the camp."

Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp

Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp

"Anabezi Luxury Tented Camp review"

4 nights Arrived 31 Jul 2024
"Arrived to find the camp half empty and got emptier during our visit !

Lawerence was our guide; very attentive and keen for us to do things but took a while for him to realise that we did'nt need to be on the go all the time following our week in the Luangwa valley. Excellent opportunities to view animals but felt a little like a safari park after unhabituated animals of the Luangwa. Did a boat trip, sundowners on an island in the Zambezi, had lunch in a boat on the Zambezi and had an all day drive heading east up river.

Food felt a little unexciting perhaps due to the lack of guests and the head chef being away (we met her at the airstrip on departure !). Staff happy to arrange almost any activity but they struggled with the idea that we might want a lie in or quiet afternoon !

For someone who wants a luxury hotel and a good chance of seeing animals the Anabezi would be a good choice, but possibly doesn't mix well with Tafika and linked camps/activities."
