My Jun 2017 trip
Tanzania and 1 other country between 28 Jun 2017 and 8 Jul 2017
"Overall a fantastic trip, lots to see and take in. Missed the great migration but will go back some other time. Almost sensory overload and after 6 days of continuous safari driving we took a half day off just chilling and taking in the view from the veranda.
Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Serengeti was an excellent combo with diverse landscapes and different scenery. Zanzibar is a very nice resort location and Stonetown was an interesting surprise with the slave museum well worth at least an hour.
Tarangire was originally our "backup option" but turned out to be our favorite of the trips as we love elephants and the local staff and walking guides offered a fantastic experience, not only in the jeeps but also on foot walking which is well worth promoting as not all parks do guided walks."

The Highlands
"Bumby ride, excellent views"
2 nights
Arrived

"Long bumpy ride from the gate entrance to the accommodation, last leg of the road up to the Highlands could use a touch up
Excellent location, wonderful food.
Some minor issues with malfunctioning hot water pump, hard to light the open fire. Quite steep on the slopes so hard work if you're Senior (or out of shape) walking back up to the restaurant.
Masai interaction was very interesting but perhaps a bit "forced" and touristy, a more casual approach with smaller groups might promote more interaction. But still very memorable.
The guide we had here (Festo) wasn't as knowledgeable as the guides in Little Olivers and frankly perhaps a bit junior for a 5 star resort. Nice guy but didn't seem to have as deep of a network with the guides on the radio, leaving him out of the loop of the spotting chatter on the radio. I had to go and fetch him in the workers office 10min after our agreed morning departure, not very impressive.
Lovely to see so many locals and Masai enrolled in the workforce, a detail we found particularly nice with Asilia (same was true for little olivers).
Overall a lovely stay in a spectacular location but a lot of jeep hours stacked up at the end."

Grumeti River Camp
"Nice location - to late for the migration"
2 nights
Arrived
3 Jul 2017
"Unfortunately we missed the migration, it passed through 2 weeks before we arrived. Not Grumetis fault though.
Very nice accommodation, best veranda of the trip, lovely spot for a couple to hang out and watch the wildlife. River was a bit dry but at the right time of the year it would be spectacular. Hippo and Hyena walking up around the tent at night so perhaps nerwrecking if you're a light sleeper.
Airstrip 5 min from the camp - very good.
Food and drinks lacked nothing - gained 2kg on eating too much lovely food.
Very accommodating staff, managers not local (South Africa) which is a different approach than Asilia. We always like to see as many locals enrolled as possible. But everybody was very nice.
Post migration with a dry river doesn't offer as much wildlife as Tarangire did, 50+ lions in the roaming pride but was hard to find. Our jeep had a run in with local park "enforcers", who drove up with a full pickup 10 pax with covered faces starting to make allegations to our guide driving off-road. Didn't feel official and left everybody a bit shaken. Didn't feel unsafe but did distract the group.
Did comment to Grumeti to try to separate bird watchers and big game lovers in separate cars as the focus between the two type of groups is wasted different and not really jointly compatible.
Dead hippo in the river in front of camp started to send off a bit of a smell, not the camps fault, they were in the process of trying to figure out historical remove it.
Told them to copy Asilias walki talkie solutions, so guest could reach out to the camp team if need something or want to arrange pickup in the dark.
With the migration in full swing and more water in the river this camp would be a Top notch location."

Baraza Resort & Spa
"Luxury feel but perhaps more staff?"
3 nights
Arrived
5 Jul 2017
"Very nice, almost colonial feel. Big Long Beach, not crowded
Resort is stretched out along the beach so sometimes hard to get a waiter, maybe a bit more staff needed to cover the pool and the beach (luxury problem..)
The buffet nights wasn't as impressive as the set menu nights, in fact it felt a bit cheap. Food was good quality though for the most part. 45 min to prep your lunch options was a bit ridiculous though.
About 1hr drive from Stonetown, 45min from airport"
