My Sep 2016 trip

Zambia between 11 Sep 2016 and 21 Sep 2016

Trip rating: Excellent
"Expert Africa arranged a great experience for us. We did not really know what to expect of a holiday in Zambia. Too little is said about this wonderful country and its game parks. In South Luangwa Park we had spectacular drives and walks. We saw so many animals and some of the most spectacular birds in Africa. Our trip was so well organised with great attention to detail. There was never a moment of uncertainty. At airports we were met as promised and escorted to our next flight. All aspects of our journeys were well planned and glitch-free.

We had done our research and we had decided to build out trip round Robin Pope camps. We contacted several specialists in this type of holiday. Expert Africa offered good advice and came up with a good package. It was good to work with just one adviser - we felt comfortable with him and we had confidence in his advice. That confidence was not misplaced.

The Robin Pope service was truly excellent. Imagine a hotel where everyone knows your name, where everyone greets you as a friend, where you are welcomed back each day as one of the family. Staff are clearly trained to provide a great personal service with professionalism and style. Everyone, without exception-managers, guides, cooks, waiters, night watchmen added charm to the service they provided.

Suggestions to help us improve our trips or our service:

As you will have read we really cannot fault the organisations involved in the trip. It would be nice to think that the Robin Pope organisation continues to keep this balance of professionalism and personality."

Nkwali

Nkwali

"great start to an unforgettable experience"

3 nights Arrived 12 Sep 2016
"Nkwali is in a beautiful position on the bank of the river. Our accommodation was such a surprise-a huge beautifully made bed in the centre of a thatched "hut" situated well away from neighbouring "huts". The open front had views onto the river. At night the bedroom was prepared with mosquito nets to keep us insect free. The open, but completely private, bathroom/double wash basins and toilet were at the back. We were advised to keep colourful items such as toothpaste/pills out of sight of baboons-good advice as it happened. We had one invasion but no damage done.

Staff at the camp were without exception friendly and helpful.

Because animals can stray into the camp we were escorted from our accommodation to the dining and bar areas during the hours of darkness. Expect some unfamiliar noises at night! Hippos snort outside your window, lions roar and geese gabble.

Breakfast was served on the river bank (very early!) so that we could get out on game drives before 6.30. The other meals were served in the open where we sat at a long table. Pre lunch and dinner drinks were served at the bar. These arrangement made for a very sociable atmosphere which was well managed by the bar staff and manager."

Tena Tena

Tena Tena

"A spectacular setting!"

3 nights Arrived 15 Sep 2016
"Accommodation at Tena Tena was in zipped tents on a concrete base. As at Nkwali the bed was the "main event" situated to give a perfect view of the river. The bar area at this camp is truly spectacular with easy chairs and cushions spread around at different levels.

Because the camp is set in a fairly flat area there is a good chance of invasion! Our most excitement here was the arrival of an elephant at lunch time. He meandered up from the river as though he was a visiting guest. He stayed for 30 minutes or so-a great pre-lunch event.

As well as the "formal" dining area we had evening BBQs on the river bank. Breakfasts were on a grassy area , again near the river.

All aspects of service was again excellent"

"Our final camp-and we were so sorry to leave."

2 nights Arrived 18 Sep 2016
"This is an older camp with accommodation in more traditional rondavels. These are situated above the river with raised balconies that allow a fantastic view of the river and hippos as well as herds of elephant who crossed the river every day while we were staying.

Again every detail of the accommodation, while older in style, was was perfect. I understand that it may become necessary to move this site because the river bank is slowly eroding. What a shame that would be as this really is a beautiful and traditional site. In comparison to the 2 other sites the public areas are less sophisticated perhaps but that just adds to the charm and to the sense of being in an older Africa"
