Tanzanian eclipse safari
Tanzania between 28 Aug 2016 and 5 Sep 2016
"We went for the eclipse, as much as the safari and we were not disappointed on either front.
The itinerary was perfect with a mix of what felt an authentic bush safari experience and a dash of more luxury towards the end. We found were were more comfortable with the bush than anything else & that was a wonderful revelation.
Expert Africa (Liz in particular) were a remarkably efficient and knowledgeable team - questions were answered swiftly, despite booking flights outside of Expert Africa, they were still happy to help me negotiate flight changes with my agent......over & above.
Other questions were also answered swiftly, and the one 'problem' was dealt with quickly & professionally.
Suggestions to help us improve our trips or our service:
None.........all good!"

Jongomero Camp
"Professional but 'corporate' stay"
2 nights
Arrived
2 Sep 2016
"We came to Jongomero following a fly camping experience that was second to none......so the expectation levels were high. That said, the desire for comfort, a shower and space to stretch out was higher!
We were not disappointed by the facilities on offer - a 'real' shower, a flushing toilet and space were very welcome.......the other guests (Tsetse flies) were less welcome, but I guess that's outside Jongo's control!
The rest of the stay was enjoyable with a good walking safari and game drive - the meals were good too.
Some of the elements felt a little stilted or formulaic, however - the chef announcing the dinner menu was a nice touch, but too formal for us. The focus on the 'bottom line' also felt too corporate and less relaxed than we'd have liked - we were charged for sun-downers, for example. Rather than a celebration of the day, it felt like an exercise in accounting. I don't mind paying (we consumed it after all) but don't recall every seeing a wine list or price list anywhere.........maybe I should have altered my expectations.
Jongomero had all the right components, but lacked some hard to define sense of warmth or 'family'."

Southern Sun Dar
"More than a crash-pad"
1 night
Arrived

"We used Southern Sun Dar more as a crash-pad to ease our 04-00 departure from Dar airport.
Facilities are as one would expect from any Western hotel.......bath, mini-bar, hairdryer, restaurant, TV etc. All were as one would expect. The staff were also helpful in letting us sort out pick-up times, print off boarding passes etc.."

The location was a good 2 hr drive from the Msembe airstrip but rather than being a drag, we had our first intro to our guide's (Moli) encyclopedic skills - each corner contained a new topic and ensured that we covered History, Zoology, Geology and more in what could have simply been a long, dusty drive to camp.
The best description would be to give an overview of the day: These started before 06-00 with coffee brought to our 'tent' (more a hotel room!) before a welcome cooked breakfast with fruit and pastries.....we then left the camp on foot around 07-00 led by our guide and Tanzanian Park Ranger. All guests (no more than six guests in camp at a time) were then treated to Moli's wide ranging and amusing observations on whatever we encountered. Truly fascinating!
The walking safari lasted around five hours, but the time flew and there we plenty of stops of refreshment and a few treats to keep our energy levels up. We were then met by the Kichaka truck who would either return us to camp, or had set up a mobile kitchen to cook us lunch.
That brings me to the cuisine......it certainly wasn't 'simple bush food' but a thoughtfully prepared variety of dishes that presented starters, main courses and deserts that were wonderfully unexpected but a delight. It seems that being in the bush doesn't restrict Kichaka's culinary ambitions!
The afternoons were then a choice of a safari drive or another walking safari.........after a little nap, of course.
The camp was a perfect mix of style & comfort (wonderful beds!) and bush (bucket shower & short-drop loo) that left us feeling that we'd had a wholly authentic experience.
Glamping? Possibly, but it was a holiday that was about more than just nice facilities - the sights, stories and food took it beyond that & the hospitality (10 staff to 6 guests!) made for a memorable experience."
