Somalisa Camp
"Tented camp in the Hwange bush"
2 nights
Arrived

"Service at the camp was excellent, the staff were exceptionally approachable and they have really thought about how to make guests comfortable e.g. hot water bottles and ponchos for morning game drives.
We saw a great range of wildlife with our guide David who was excellent and shared a wealth of information with us about the animals including tracks, diet, food chain, habitat and other 'evidence' of their presence - his enthusiasm was infectious.
The food was excellent and incorporated traditional dishes and regional produce - we absolutely loved the braai on our first night and the opportunity to try sadza porridge.
The tents are comfortable however the shower part of the tent only has a gauze roof however so you are exposed to the wind/temperature (on our second night the wind was very strong so showering was too uncomfortable and our toiletries were blown across the room). The rooms do not have hot water on tap so you have to book your shower slot. Similarly breakfast is taken outside and the main tent is not overly wind proof so warm layers are definitely required for early morning and evening."

Camp Hwange
"Beautiful camp and superb welcome in Hwange"
3 nights
Arrived

"The camp has its own concession where the guides are not restricted to the roads enabling you to get closer to the wildlife. The central boma and all of the very comfortable rooms look towards a central pan so you can game spot from breakfast or your room! The views are simply stunning and in the evening the stars above the camp fire are magical.
Service at the camp was excellent, the staff were brilliant and create an ambience at the camp of a home from home. The guides' enthusiasm was infectious and they build time to sit and watch into the drives which is often a better way to see the wildlife - on our last night we enjoyed our sundowner drinks from within the hiding point next to the Camp's pan and watched the elephants and one lion drinking as the sun set!
The food was extremely good and plentiful (breakfast, morning tea and snacks for the morning game drive, lunch, afternoon tea, sundowner drinks for the evening game drive and pre-dinner drinks and canape and three course dinner)."

In terms of activities the camp can arrange a great deal more than are advertised on its website or the high adrenaline options for which the area is well known. We were disappointed that we were not aware of the full range on offer before we booked - if we had known we would have stayed an extra night and taken a multiple entry visa (as a number of these take place on the Zambian side of the falls) e.g. Horseback safaris, Devil Pools bathing above the falls.
The food is prepared to a high standard but is really quite Western. The breakfast buffet selection and cooked option was excellent. Lunch and dinner are on a set menu basis and we found the three course dinners rather like menus in the UK (asparagus with bacon and egg hollandaise, tomato soup, beef steak, sponge puddings etc). We enjoyed Kudu one night but would have preferred to experience more regional produce and dishes."
