Safari & beach combo
Tanzania and 1 other country between 16 Jun 2007 and 1 Jul 2007
"The combination of 1 week safari and 1 week Zanzibar worked well for us. Visiting Selous and Ruaha was worthwhile as they have very different scenery. Zanzibar was very relaxing after the early starts in the game parks.
In the Stone Town make sure you visit Archipelago at lunchtime and Livingstone Beach in the evening.
Coastal Aviation helpfully held the Dar - Selous flight to wait for the delayed BA"

Mwagusi Safari Camp
"Mwagusi is slightly wild & real Africa"
3 nights
Arrived
21 Jun 2007
"The camp is largely built from natural materials (wood, thatch) and tenting, and so has a more rustic, authentic feel. Chris Fox will happily share his views on park management, conservation and tourism - which adds to the feel that this is real Tanzania.
The highlight for us was the elephants which visited our banda each night. He was just a few metres away and we could lie in bed watching through the mesh window in the canvas.
The local guides are very good at finding the animal & bird sightings, but are less good at giving detailed explanations of animal behaviour. For this reason, we would recommend Mwagusi in combination with another camp too.
Dinner is held outdoors, maybe in the sandy river bed - lit by lanterns. The food is fairly basic and would be our one key improvement area for Mwagusi"

Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel (Not currently featured by Expert Africa)
"Cool, soft white sand at Ras Nungwi"
5 nights
Arrived
24 Jun 2007
"The beach is the key attraction at Ras Nungwi. Although the lower level almost disappears at high tide, but a higher level as been created for permanent sun loungers. The pool is clean and decent size.
We had a Super Deluxe room, which was just a few meters from the beach. The bedroom was a reasonable size, although the bathroom was small.
We did one local snorkelling trip which was a pleasant afternoon, but we didn't see nearly as much as at other locations on Zanzibar. Other advertised watersports like windsurfing and waterkski-ing didn't seem to be available
Our only complaint was the the food was only average, and the seafood barbeques were over-cooked and dry."

"Traditional Zanzibar ambience with luxury"
2 nights
Arrived
29 Jun 2007
"The managers Sylie and Pius are very helpful in providing local recommendations and personal service. Its a great location for sundowners at The Africa House and several good restaurants.
The rooms are simply but well decorated with traditional furniture and fabrics. However, they are showing signs of wear - loose ceiling fans and loo seats, lights and electric sockets not working. Hand towels weren't provided in the bathroom.
Breakfast was good."

Beho Beho's hosptality is excellent too. The quality and variety of food was the best we have had at any safari lodge. Dinner has a lovely houseparty atmosphere, aided by generous servings of drinks and comfortable squashy sofas for pre and post dinner relaxing. Housekeeping is faultless and seems to happen by magic. Not once did we see a cleaner but our room was always immaculate."
