El Karama Lodge
"A very special place to stay"
3 nights
Arrived

"Our favourite lodge of the trip. The location is charming, overlooking a murmuring stream and surrounded by bush, Joseph, our guide, was a lovely man and Lovi looked after us splendidly. Sophie and Murray are an inspirational couple. The newly opened swimming pool adds enormously to the facilities and raises the profile of the place.
We found the game drives in the rough terrain somewhat strenuous but the abundant animals, particularly elephants, zebras and gazelles, and the grand distant views with Mount Kenya in the background were very rewarding. The only other vehicles occasionally seen belonged to the ranch. The walks with Joseph were a real pleasure, and our last one ended with a dash back to the car to drive to see at close quarters two lionesses devouring a young zebra.
Suppers were nicely varied and wholesome."

Naboisho Camp
"High class camp in beautiful location"
4 nights
Arrived
20 Jan 2014
"The camp is in a wonderful position, with varied views over bush and more distant hills, and the very comfortable tents are widely spread out. We again found lengthy game drives rather tiring, but our full day in the Maasai Mara Reserve was still a highlight, because of the great amount of game to be seen. The wide views in both the Reserve and the Naboisho Conservancy were also very impressive, our guides being able to spot huge elephant herds at great distances. Marion considers the two mornings of doing a walking safari with Roelof to be the best individual moments of the whole trip. In contrast to El Karama, it was possible to walk out directly from the camp.
Ken was sick one night and rested up the next day. Helen was most solicitous, and on the morning of the following day Ken was able to join the 3 hour morning walk without difficulty.
Our guide, Benjamin, was very knowledgeable and efficient but rather unsmiling.
Apart from a private visitor, we were the only guests the whole time at Naboisho Camp. Helen and Roelof kept us company at meals and took great care of us.
The meals at lunchtime were very good but again in the evening the meat tended to be tough."

It was good to have time to visit the KarenBlixenMuseum, which was a personal request to James, our guide. We also took in the David Sheldrick Trust - disappointing because it felt more like a circus or zoo and there was not much to it. The late afternoon sessions may be better but are costly.
The food was good, better at light lunches than in the evening, when meat was rather chewy."
