My Dec 2012 trip
Zanzibar and 1 other country between 17 Dec 2012 and 28 Dec 2012
"We - wife, self and 9 yr. old daughter, had a great time - a very good experience. Agent recommendations were not good for Kholle house, and very good for Unguja Lodge.
Coastal aviation and local driver through in country agent were all seamless."

Please note that Lake Manze does not have WiFi available for guests to use. It appears that when these travellers were here when they were able to pick up a faint signal from some of the office equipment - but this is not a permanent fixture, and so guests should consider themselves out of touch while at Lake Manze.
Kholle House

"Kholle house shows that in concept it was a valiant effort to restore a house with some historical pedigree as a luxury destination, but in execution it has succeeded only in restoring the house. The staff are not trained in hospitality, so don't expect service here. Attitude is somewhat sullen too, for Africans - who by in large are friendly and accommodating people in the tourism industry. It would appear that Expert Africa's arrangement with Kholle House provides what little trade it receives.
The place, while not that large was largely empty during our stay. It is located between two mosques, while makes early morning prayer quite easy for the traveler. Since it is not located particularly near to any of the tourist destinations (except Mercury's restaurant (over-priced, but OK menu), it has a certain non-tourist attractiveness, but this is overshadowed by the sterility of the accommodation and lousy service. "You're cooking my corn flakes?"
Recommending this booking is my only complaint with the arrangements made for me by Expert Africa."

We were sorry that these guests didn't enjoy Kholle House as much as we had hoped. We most recently stayed at here in February 2012 and really enjoyed our stay, so we were surprised to hear this negative feedback. We sent the feedback onto the owner who was upset to read it, and immediately looked into how they could improve. We will continue to monitor Kholle House, however it is worth bearing in mind that it is one of the least costly options in Stone Town, and so for those on a tight budget it may still be a good option.
Unguja Lodge

"From the moment you arrive until you depart you are treated like a valuable guest and friend. The villas are spectacular, and only made more so by the excellent quality of the accommodations and service. If you like an on the water outdoor experience in the lap of luxury this is for you - best of both worlds.
Located near fishing village of Kizmakazi, this lodge is a divers destination. Pretty healthy reef and some good wall. Swim with dolphins is a trip. Snorkel until you fry your backside. Kids love the pool. We really enjoyed meeting family of staff in the village and learning about local life there. This is something the lodge can help arrange but is essentially self initiated if you like that sort of thing.
The food was excellent - their chef could work anywhere he wanted. We don't go anywhere twice - we like adventure,, but we'll probably go back here because its hard to turn your back on paradise. While it does not have extensive miles of pure white beach, it has enough beach to be pretty and satisfy beach bum desires."

Although wifi is available, the need for all of that drops away with the basic tent camp, outdoor adventuring, flame lighting and good social surroundings. We had a really good time (w/ 9 yr. old daughter). Time of year makes a difference. Manze is good yr round except in heavy monsoon, but when its dry season the location on a lake makes it a wildlife magnet."
