Marvellous Namibia
Namibia between 9 May 2008 and 23 May 2008
We are left with a desire to go back and spend longer at a few choice places - anywhere other than Swakopmund! - and try a few others e.g. Caprivi Strip. The lodges exceeded our expectations and even Okaukeujo turned out better than we hoped.
The biggest impression was made by all the staff at the lodges. As the public face of Namibia they have a lot to be proud of and could teach hotel staff around the world a thing or two about hospitality. Even car refuelling was a delight with happy singing windscreen washers.
The trip went without a hitch, so Expert Africa's organisation was excellent."

Sossus Dune Lodge
"Crickets abound at Sossus Dune Lodge"
The snack provided with the sundowner was a meal in itself and easily the best provided by anywhere that we stayed in Namibia!
Our guide on our trip to the dunes - George - was incredibly knowledgable and considerate of two out of shape people trying to climb the dunes at sunset (see snacks above).
Would love to come back in another season to see how the landscape changes (we were here in May). Also would be nice to go at a time when there weren't so many crickets on the walkways (they have to be seen to be believed and are only around whilst there's vegetation).
Signposting for the lodge at the Sesriem gate is not as clear as it could be. Need to add the lodge to the sign for the canyon."

Guesthouse Indongo, Namibia (this camp has since closed)
"Guesthouse Indifferent"
While the hotel itself looks quite nice, our room was obviously a twin that had been hastily converted to a double and in the process lost all its furniture other than the bed. The single bedside table provided was actually a childs play table (the chairs for which sat forlorn in the dining room) and on the table sat two lamps the telephone and all of the usual publications, plus a phone directory! leaving hardly any room for anything else. There was plenty of room for another bedside table and a chair or two, but none was provided.
The room was provided with a safe, which was broken and a fridge which froze our water in the non-freezer compartment.
The bathroom was tired. The shower dripped constantly and there were no shelves etc. to lay anything down."

Doro Nawas
"On a high at Doro Nawas"
Another lovely place with beautiful views from the hilltop main lodge. The staff were helpful and cheerful; Johann was the perfect host and appeared to be everywhere at all times for eveyone (maybe he has a twin?). We had a puncture to our car and Johann was insistent that they fixed it before we left. It was this sort of attention to guest needs that made this a special place."

Okaukuejo Camp
"Okaukuejo Restcamp"
The room we had deserves particular praise as it had a separate kitchen/lounge area and outside eating table with a BBQ. It also had a universal electrical socket, air conditioning and screens on the windows."

Onguma Bush Camp
"Chilling out at Onguma Bush Camp"
As with all the other lodges in Namibia, the staff were friendly, helpful and cheerful. This is an excellent place to chill out, sit by the pool, sit round the fire of an evening or watch the sun go down from the bar.
We ended up going into the park because Onguma's only game drive on their land was not until 4pm. So it might have been better if we had stayed at Namutoni. Having said that, we liked Onguma so much that this is a minor quibble."

Okonjima Bush Camp
"No catnaps at Okonjima Bush Camp"
The room at Okonjima is our favourite and it was a big shame that we only stayed there one night.
We did more activities in the nineteen hours on the camp than we did anywhere else, simply because they were so interesting - leopard tracking, porcupine feeding, lion watching, cheetah breakfast and wild dog spotting.
The food here was really exceptional - afternoon cake, 4 course dinner, sunrise muffins pre-game drive and bushmans omlette post game drive. Our guide Dean was full of fun and knowledge."
