Turaco Safari

This top-value holiday idea combines two safari areas with a week on the Indian Ocean island of Zanzibar. Photograph lions and elephants, then relax under the palms on a powder-sand beach.

Turaco Safari: Summary

Turaco Safari in a nutshell

By carefully combining a safari in Tanzania’s remote southern parks with a week on Zanzibar, this itinerary idea that we’ve called the Turaco holiday offers great value. You start the trip in Nyerere National Park with three nights at Lake Manze, a rustic bush camp in a wildlife-rich, lakeshore area close to a branch of the Rufiji River. A range of activities is on offer, from safari drives to bush walks and afternoon boat safaris – a lovely way to enjoy a sundowner.

You’ll then head further west to Ruaha National Park, a 90-minute flight from Nyerere National Park. Here you’ll stay at the laidback Mdonya Old River Camp, keeping an eye out for the elephants that frequently visit the camp, and explore the arid landscape in search of leopards and lion prides (Ruaha is home to the biggest population of lions in Africa).

Post-safari you’ll fly back east to Zanzibar, spending six nights on the island. Stay in a quirky hotel in the heart of Stone Town and discover its fascinating history. Your final stop on this sample itinerary is Zanzibar Pearl Hotel on the pretty east coast of Zanzibar, where you can snorkel over colourful coral reefs or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.

Lake Manze Adventure Camp

Days 1-4

Lake Manze Adventure Camp opened in 2007 on a prime location overlooking Lake Manze. One of the more northerly of a series of lakes and rivers, this lies within a rich alluvial floodplain of the Rufiji River. The camp itself, lies at the heart of Tanzania's Nyerere National Park (formerly the Selous Game Reserve), in a grove of borassus, doum and wild date palms. Deliberately rustic in style, it provides guests with simple comforts and a strong sense of wilderness.

Mdonya Old River Camp

Days 4-7

Set in acacia woodland in the heart of Ruaha National Park, Mdonya Old River Camp is kept deliberately simple. It makes no apologies for sticking to safari basics – in fact it rather revels in the idea – and this results in a camp with a clear focus where you always know you're on safari and out in the wilds.

Zanzibar Coffee House

Days 7-9

The small Zanzibar Coffee House Hotel sits above a coffee shop down one of Stone Town's narrow streets. All their coffee comes from the owner's plantation in southern Tanzania. The beans are roasted on site at the hotel, and as a result the entire hotel has a lovely aroma.

Zanzibar Pearl Boutique Hotel

Days 9-13

Zanzibar Pearl Boutique Hotel was formerly known as Matemwe Beach Village. The property was extensively renovated and is under new management since re-opening in 2019.
